Ear infection help

Poor dog is feeling pretty rotten bless him. Took him to the vet on Monday after an attempted bite of DH after he touched his head.

Dog appears to have a fairly dreadful ear infection with discharge +++ which definitely wasn't there on Friday when I did the monthly ear check! Anyway, two days in and the discharge is still present plus the yellow ear drops = a very disgusting ear with wet fur around it. He seems utterly miserable this morning.

Do I;

1. clean out the ear and remove all the discharge and built up ear drops carefully with warm water? He's very compliant and would let me do this.
   
   
2. carry on with the drops for the next couple of days and see how we go?
   
   
3. call the vet and ask for some decent pain relief and see if he needs different/ more drops?

Call your vet. They will more than likely tell you to continue with drops for a few days however he may be having a reaction that his body is rejecting. I usually try to clean my dogs ears out but just like humans you risk pushing it deeper in causing further infection.

Thanks I'll call them now, I hate feeling like I'm calling too often but it is dreadful. It's hard to know where to put the drops in too! I'm going with 'if it makes you shake your head it's in the right place' 🤦‍♀️

My dog had an ear infection a while ago and I found it quite difficult to know how much, if any of the drops were going in because it was just a plastic bottle that you had to squeeze into the dog's ear.

Clearly you're getting the stuff out of the bottle, but I found out that I wasn't actually getting it in far enough. I was also nervous of squeezing the bottle too hard in case I put the whole lot in in one go. And I found the dog shook her head regardless of how far in the stuff went.

I ended up going back to the vet for more advice, which is how I knew I wasn't doing it properly.

I sometimes feel like I'm living at the vet and it can feel a bit embarrassing sometimes - you're not alone in that - I actually mentioned this to the vet nurse the other day but I'm pretty certain they'd rather have you there frequently than having something left to get really bad before you visit them.

And remember you are paying them for their services.

Hope he gets better soon. Earache can be very painful.
