The doghouse

My dog is scared of our kitten

Our friendly family dog has been brought up with a cat and they lived peacefully together for 2 years, keeping a polite but friendly distance. Following our cat's death, we now have a kitten- she is friendly and gentle, and purrs like a steam train.
We introduced them gradually and all was fine, no drama. That was more than 2 months ago. But over time, when the kitten comes to say hello to the dog and tries to affectionately headbut or play (she never uses claws), he squeals with terror and runs off, often pursued by the kitten, who clearly thinks it's a game. He is 3x her size, if he ever growled, she'd probably run away (not that he ever would- he's too soppy!). We are not sure how to build his confidence, or teach the cat to stay away from him. Any advice?

Not too sure but most training seems to begin with treats, could you persuade him to stay near her a little longer by treating him?

Yes, agree with user149 treating is the way to go, lots and lots of treats.

I've managed to get my cat walking near strange cats without freaking out through fear by dint of lots of treating. She still has some issues with tabby and black cats but she absolutely fine with gingers.

She grew up with two ginger cats who are sadly no longer alive so not sure if that's the reason she's more tolerant of them as she and my male cat adored each other.

Just a thought, is it possible he thinks she growling at him when she's purring?

Never thought he could think of a cat's purr like a growl but who knows what goes on a dog's brain!! He's more cuddle than food orientated (he really is a stupid mutt!) but will definately buy some treats- bribery's worth a try! Thanks...
