The doghouse

If your dog rolls in something invisible and odourless, do you wash them?

Today DDog found something very exciting, sniffed at it a lot and then rolled before I could stop her. Then did a little excited wee. When I looked, it was just grass, but clearly there was something very special there as far as she was concerned.

In the past I've washed her, but today it was late, cold, and I couldn't be arsed. Am I foul, or is this normal?

Oh good! I'm normally a bit of a germ-phobe, but have had to learn to relax since getting our little horror.

I used to have a clean house! If the dogs don't smell or look dirty they don't get cleaned!

I wash everytime...if he rolls I know it’s something nasty whether it’s poo or animal wee

Meh, if I can see and smell nothing, she got lucky. No bath!

Can't see or smell= doesn't exist:))) also, not good for the dog's skin and coat to wash too often

My Bertie is washed every week due to oily skin due to allergies so if he rolls I know it’s something nasty....other family members can’t smell but I can!

I only wash if he stinks or is filthy. He regularly rolls in invisible things and I do a sniff test on him when I get home to check if he needs bathing!

No I wouldn't wash in those circumstances.

My dog does this sometimes and a couple of times I've sniffed her immediately after she's rolled and all she smells of is something herby.

She also sometimes likes to roll on her ball when she's caught it, which means she's also rolled on the grass where other dogs have probably weed.

So no, I'd be washing her after every visit to the park.

Mine rolls in certain plants. No
Smell. No mess. I’m not washing. She has skin issues I don’t want to aggravate either.

You shouldn’t wash dogs too much, it buggers up their natural oils. Unless they’ve definitely rolled in something smelly I really wouldn’t bother.

I wash tripey beard occasionally and rinnse really muddy paws. If she doesn’t stink I leave well alone! Saw a dermatologist who asked what we bathed our dog in. She was quite pleased when I said we didn’t really. Grin

I had a similar conversation with a vet sometime ago Wolfie, he asked me how often I bathe my dog and I somewhat shamefacedly admitted that I didn't except for paws and tummy when they get muddy.

His reply was 'that's the right answer'. I felt quite proud of my unwashed dog. Grin

She stank once when playing with a dog who had been eating the muck spread on a field. Did bathe those bits then! Grin

Mine used to eat the contents of the cats' litter tray if she got the chance when she was a puppy. That tended to result in some rather frantic teeth cleaning.

Dogs, such charming creatures.

I don't. She'd have 3 baths a day if I bothered.

Very reassured by all these replies! (So is DDog)

Mine often rolls in something I can't see, but after some detective work I discovered it is bird poo, and only tiny little poos like they've come from sparrows (not great big duck or chicken shits). My dog goes crazy but there is nothing to see or smell when she gets up (fortunately!)

I definitely don't. My dogs get 2-3 baths a year and that is it. One of my friends baths her dogs every week or so and her dogs have dull brittle fur. It just doesn't look healthy. My dogs have lovely shiny fur and never smell. My terrier loves to roll in stinks but I never rush him off to the bathroom. It just vanishes. I don't know how.

Mine rolls in the house on clean carpets. He just likes rolling. I only wash if he smells
