Er, malt and moult both sound the same in my accent. Grin

Really? They’re like an American mall and mould but with t’s...

I was just sitting saying the sounds to myself and realised that sounded like I was going, I don’t believe in your accent, rofl

Just I’ve never heard an accent where mauled and mould sound the same and thats almost the difference when I say them (it’s not quite as long in malt, but closer to mauled than mould would be to it) and I was being nosy rather than scoffing Blush

Malt vinegar and dog moult sound the same in my accent

Malt/Moult sound similar to me too, as do Spayed/Spade (Australian). Mind you, I'm a spelling pedant with the best of them.

Totally agree spelling-wise but I think you may be mispronouncing either one or the other if you don't think they sound the same. I have a very "English" middle-class accent and they sound EXACTLY the same when I say them (which I have been now for the last three minutes - and now feel like I'm going slightly mad).

I always end up doing that on prpnounciatuon threads Grin

Al and oul definitely make different sounds...

I am struggling to think of anyone I’ve heard say both malt and moult tbh, but I’ve never met anyone who had a reason to me saying moult who didn’t pronounce it like I do and malt is a fairly common word.

I’m assuming that people are pronouncing malt to rhym with mat?
I also have a middle class English accent and that just doesn’t sound right to my ear.
I’m not a spelling pedant and don’t really care how something should be spelt. Context is everything so I just assume that a dog is losing its coat rather than letting it germinate nicely.

Oh, I would say moult rhymes with colt, not halt.

Clearly I'm wrong!

What if your dog's called Whisky...?

Flippetydip · 21/09/2018 14:45

Oh my word - surely colt and halt and indeed malt/moult all rhyme?!

No! Colt has the 'o' sound from no.

Halt has the sound of 'awe'.

“malt to rhym with mat?” No, that would be weird.

“EXACTLY the same pronunciation:”

I hear a difference on those.

“Oh, I would say moult rhymes with colt, not halt.”

Yes, mould rhymes with colt and malt rhymes with half.

Moult not mould... this doesn’t need any extra confusion, lol

I'm Scottish with a slightly anglicised accent. Moult rhymes with colt, malt rhymes with fault when I say them. 'Oh' v 'aw'.

Halt not half FFS, no clue what was wrong with my fingers on that last one...

How interesting - I've listened loads of times (probably enough to get me sacked now) and I really can't hear a difference! Maybe we hear regionally as well!

Moult, colt, fault and halt all sound the same to me.

Just as bough, cough, though and through are spelt the same but all sound different. That’s the English language for you.
