Dog weeing on the floor

We have a ten month old Labrador who is fantastic, except she still wees on the floor through the night. We have had her checked by the vets and it isn't medical. In the words of the vet "it's all in her head." she can sometimes be dry through the night but the majority of the time she is having accidents. It's always in the same place. We have tried getting rid of the scent but it hasn't made a difference.

She was crated as a pup but she's not now she's just in her bed in the kitchen. She never whines or barks during the night and never has. I'm just looking for a bit of advice. Do we crate her again or try something different? I'm so fed up with waking up and the first thing I need to do is mop the floor!

What I would do in this situation is first set up a baby monitor so you can see and hear when she wakes. I actually have a cheap ip camera that streams to my phone and I can move about remotely. This will give you an idea of when she is peeing.

Then I would set an alarm to wake me before she has the chance to pee so I could take her out and praise so she starts to get the association that it's best outside to toilet even in the night. I would then extend the time very slowly so she starts to hold it a bit longer but still use the camera so I could hear if she is getting up.

How long is it before her last pee and when you get up? Despite a lot of dogs having bladders of steel my dog can usually only go around 6-7 hours at night before needing a pee and his is almost 2 years old.

Can you not wake in the night and take her?

How long between her going to bed and getting up? For example, expecting her to go say, 8pm-7am is probably too much of an ask, so you'll need to wake her when you go up to bed for the toilet.

Thanks for the replies. We go to be bed between 10 and 11pm and then up at 6. She goes out for a wee last thing before bed and straight out in the morning. I have considered getting up with her but I wasn't sure if that was right incase she got into the habit of weeing during the night and didn't learn to hold it. However from your responses I will definitely start getting up with her. I'm sure I've got a baby monitor somewhere too. Perhaps I've been naive in thinking she'll get there eventually: especially as she has been dry and sometimes can go a couple of days with no accidents.

10pm to 6am would be just a stretch to much for my dog during some nights. He has never been one to go for hours and hours at night like some dogs.

I tend to take BiteyDog out around 11pm and he goes when we wake around 5-6am.

The good thing about the baby monitor is you can at least stop the accidents by taking her out when she gets up. That will hopefully stop the habit of just going inside the house when she wakes.

I tend to wake BiteyDog up late at night to go for his last pee but then if I want to laze about in the morning I have to get up early to let him out and we both just go back to sleep for a couple of hours.

10 months old is still quite young for a larger dog like a Labrador, I think. Try mopping the floor with bio washing liquid, that's supposed to take the smell away that makes them think that's the place to pee, apparently? Also maybe take up his/her water bowl at bedtime so it's not down overnight. Those are the two things that were recommended to me, I think it was the combination of doing them both that fixed the problem for us.

Mine is six months old and we mostly need to get up with him in the night still. He has his last pee at about 10.30, is up around 4am for the toilet and back to bed until we get up at 7am. It's not ideal but it's part of puppy ownership!

Badlypup tends to go from 10 til (maybe) 8ish, we open the back door at 7 but she doesn’t go out until later. She has a bladder of steel though she’s eight months old.


If you’d dog is crate trained, I’d put them back in the crate and see if that helps.
