Namechanged
We got our family dog when I was a primary aged child, I’m now mid 20s she is an old girl. She’s been my best friend for all those years, bullying, breakups, uni, pregnancy she’s my world. I adore her.
My parents are away and I can’t get hold of them and I’m looking after ddog.
She’s very wheezy all the time trembling and choking struggling a lot and the vets have told me to bring her up in about 45 mins.
I know she’s old and bodies stop doing their best, but whenever I’ve had a problem ddog would make it go away. DM and DF aren’t around and DP is working until 10.

I’m heartbroken that she’s struggling so much and I can’t fix it, But I also selfishly feel scared and alone and I just want a hug.

I realise I sound about 12 here. But honestly I’ve never been through much grief. Im feel the same chest crushing pain I did when we lost DS during pregnancy, and I am distraught. I just want someone to talk to.

Oh User Flowers you dont sound about 12, you just love your dog.

We lost our old dog a few months ago and it is still very raw, so I understand. Keep talking if it helps x

Sending you a hug. Flowers I can feel the pain you're in right now. Your relationship with her is so special and you will never be able to replace her. I've been through this twice and am dreading the day I lose my old boy. Right now, please try to take some comfort from the fact that you're being brave enough to do what's right for her - it will mean so much to her as well, as knowing you're right there beside her. We're here for you. x

Making difficult decisions about my dogs have been the time when I have most felt like a child, and wanting a proper grown up to come and make the decisions for me. Sadly, it is inevitable that they grow old and we have to make the hard decisions in their best interests.

I am hoping it is good news for you at the vets this afternoon and it's just something to do with the hot weather, but if not and you do have to make a sad decision, you will make it in her best interests. It does get better (I'm tearing up writing this 18 months after losing my last dog...)

Thank you so much! I would normally take her with another family member but no ones around.
She is such an amazing girl.
They really are part of the family aren’t they.

Sending hugs, it's the most heartbreaking part of dog ownership, we made the decision recently for our 14 year old dog, a dear friend said to me - it's better a day too early than a minute too late. Gave me great comfort. Flowers here for you.

She is still herself in between the coughing a spluttering, but it’s getting worse.
I’m hoping it’s not today, it would be nice for her if we were all around her. She’s sleeping now and seems a bit better.
I just can’t believe how much it hurts.

They really are. And she will know hoe much you love her too Smile

I'm hoping for good news for you too. If you do have a difficult decision to face, the vet won't make you decide straight away unless it is extremely urgent and in her best interests. Will your partner be able to leave work early to be with you?

I am so sorry. I lost my old girl about 18 months ago. I looked at her feeling ill and possibly in pain and not enjoying life and knew it was time. She had been getting very much worse over the last few days and was, that day, unable to eat (had various incurable medical problems and couldn't walk very far but had still been getting by and retained her sense of humour) so I had tried to prepare myself for this but it is still terrible. I was glad I made the decision because she was not enjoying life any more and it was the best thing I could do for her. They do leave a huge hole in the home, though. I kept looking at the doorway, thinking she was about to come lumbering through it. Time helps. I must confess that, after a few weeks I was still feeling miserable and my parrot was also very sad and I thought that we could either sit like that feeling depressed or I could think about giving another rescue dog a new home. Shortly afterwards, I got JoyfulDog and she is completely different in character from my old girl (who I still miss and is on my screensaver so parrot and I can gaze upon her) but has hugely lifted my spirits. I am sorry you are going through this. xx

Hand hold from me.
You’re taking the right action for her.
It’s a very difficult decision to make.
