Our collie has gone missing - worried sick :(

Our border collie vanished from one of the fields on our farm on Friday afternoon and there's been no sign of her since! We are on the glos/ oxon border near chipping Norton and I've reported her to everyone I can think of.

Just wondering what to do next? What have I missed? It's looking more likely that someone has picked her up - she is microchipped but that's only as good as someone taking her to be scanned. No tag as she's a working dog.

Anyway she's a red and white border collie bitch, 2 years old and very friendly wearing a brown and red checked collar.

Any ideas what else I can do? Tia Thanks

This is my worst nightmare Flowers

Have you put up posters in the local village? Have you searched the fields and woodland - it's possible she's got caught on something, or injured, and can't make it home. Trapped in an outbuilding perhaps? Has she got form for going off on her own little adventures?

Is there much of a market for working collies to be stolen and sold on? If so is there a common site that's used in addition to the typical Gumtree and Pets4Homes?

Oh I'm so sorry, you must be going through hell.
Really hope she finds her way home.

Have a look at Canine Capture UK. BBQ near where she went missing in case she's still about?

OP, I realise you may not want to because it gives away who you are but is there a link to the details that any of us can share for you?

Alternatively, do you have contacts for the surrounding farms and others in the county? I am just wondering if someone takes her and tries to sell her as a working dog they may approach those farms first? Or if she is roaming or injured then they can keep an eye our for her and knows where she belongs?

Are there facebook group for farmers?

Are there forums for people who are rural - such as Horse & Hound? Get the details on there too (obs be careful about revealing too much personal info).

I wonder if reaching out to other people (e.g. www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/aberdeenshire/821292/north-east-farmer-united-with-all-four-missing-dogs/) to check what they did to get their dogs back successfully might also reveal some extra tips.

There are loads of popular twitter feeds and maybe tweeting to those could also assist?

Local newspapers might run a small story or appeal.

Get posters put up in local shops and businesses. Look out for local events (fun days etc.) which are often on this time of year and ask people there if you can make an announcement or put up posters, or give out photos of her so get local people looking for her.

Don't let any of them forget your dog so keep reaching out often.

Sorry, re the twitter feeds, I meant dog specific ones - or even targeting dog loving celebs?

You poor thing. Is she insured? If so, your insurance company may pay some of the costs towards a search for her, or at least towards some professional posters. We've used Animal Search UK twice now for our missing cats, and the insurance paid towards some of the costs. They were very good. www.animalsearchuk.co.uk/missing-pet-search-team

Otherwise, ditto above advice re twitter/FB. Have you got any local dog walker companies who might keep an eye out for her? (not sure whether this is a thing in the countryside, but here in S.London, we asked all the local dog walkers to look out for the missing animals for us).

Our collie went missing many years ago & was eventually sent to Battersea Dogs home after going via the local police station & then the dog warden.

I so hope you find her soon Flowers

Postering is absolutely key (I've looked for lots of lost dogs as am a member of DogLost). You need to get the word out. Give posters as flyers to postmen (see if they'lll put one up in the sorting office for the posties to see), schoolchildren/schools (schoolchildren are keen to help and are more observant than most), shopkeepers, businesses, PUBS - stop people you pass walking and tell them and give them a poster and hand them out in the pub. You can't put out enough posters. Follow all the DogLost email advice you must have received when you registered your dog on there. You need a sighting. She's only been gone since Friday so don't despair. In North London there is a Romanian rescue dog (collie-type) that has been out and about since April and there were no sightings for two weeks or more when she first legged it. She is managing fine, seemingly, as a stray so far. I went on the poster trail where she first went missing (Hampstead Heath area) and, though the owner had told me she'd put out posters there, there were none to see and I stopped lots of people (including lots of group dogwalkers) and talked to them about missing dog and gave them posters. (You have to forget you are British and waylay strangers!). All were concerned and took several posters to pass on to others. It was surprising how few knew about it in such a relatively small area. A few days after that we got a sighting. It pays off. You are obviously in a much more sparsely occupied area but can still put up posters on footpaths, I hope.

A dog was lost in my area and there was a huge twitter exercise to raise awareness and the dog was found. It brought other people into the search. If you tag in people with dogs like Simon Cowell, Jonathan Ross, Ricky Gervais etc it can help spread the word.

Could you do some good old fashioned door knocking in local village(s)? In case someone has seen her but isn't a tech savvy person so won't have seen any online posts. Local shops and petrol stations are key to hit up too.

@whereareyouscocks have you let the guard room at Brize Norton know? They might be able to ask the patrols to keep an eye out. They cover a big area so it's worth a try, especially as you're less than 20 miles away.

A dog in my village recently went missing in this heat. She was found four days later 20 meters from where she ran off from -she had been spotted but wouldn't come out, even to her owners as she was so scared. After six hours of them sat in the middle of a car park with plenty of smelly food & her doggy sister, she ventured out and they got her. Don't give up hope! Keep shouting her name - I presume if she is a working dog she is well trained and she'll come to you if she hears you x

It might be worth trying the search and rescue for dogs.

here

K9 tracker

K( search dog also info on here to help you

this is group using drones to search for missing dogs

Are you able to put a safe trap nearby and put in some of your clothes to attract her to it - check it regularly. Dogs behave very differently from normal when they are lost or worried.

SlothMama · 24/07/2018 20:46

Share the poster with local dog walkers in the area, can you ask local shops if you can put posters up? Try putting out some clothes with your scent on it.
