Hi there

My 12 year old staffie cross is booked in to be pts tommorow evening. She has been diagnosed with a tumour in the pelvis by feel.

She started off seeming to have diffuculty passing urine and squatting and not seeming to not pass much. Also had days between passing stools. Then had blood in her urine which the vets said was an infection had antibiotics and it all cleared up .

Previous to that she had been at the vets around two months or so earlier with nail growing out akwardly and they suggested for her to loose some weight. She wasnt obese but a little overweight . We put her on a diet and then took her back for a check up where they said she was a good weight and healthy.

I thought she looked too thin when i took her to be prescribed the antibiotic the vets said she was fine weight wise. She seemed to continue loosing the weight so we stopped the diet . But it continued dropping off. Around the same time a family member died very suddenly . It took 4 months to complete the arrangments and finally have the funeral.

We noticed she now seemed very very thin got her back to vets then the same week again and they thought it could be parasite meds given. They said it could possibly be cancer but to have a xray to try and see whats going on . We would need to see how she got on as currently too poorly to put under anistetic.

Took her back for a check up the following week so we could see how she was faring see a different vet who said straight away she was too ill to xray and took weak to put under anistetic as it was high risk. Also we wouldnt be able to see anything and we would be putting her through it for nothing.

He examined her and felt around and said its a pelvic tumour which is causing great pain in her hips affecting her kidneys and also blocking her bowel. He said sadly all that could be done was prescribe painkillers and make her comfortable until we felt it was time to let her go. He could see she still had some fight in her.

Now she looks like shes had enough.
We decided whether we are ready or not its best to let her go. A part of me thinks should we have xrayed though? I dont think it could be anything else apart from cancer with all the sypmtoms and the weight loss.

So very sad Sad

Oh how sad, they break your heart. Horrendous decision to take but we have to think of the well being of our gorgeous furry friends and be guided by the vet I guess. Sorry OP.

I'm really sorry. My lovely lab died just before Xmas from a tumour, we think. We hadn't thought that she was that bad, she was booked in to see the vet the next day, but she died while ww were out. I'd give anything to have had that last day again, to spoil her and give her all her favourite treats and go to her favourite places. So while it's horrible, you are doing the right thing. Try and treasure your last day. Give her a hug from me, and have one yourself. 💐🍷

You are doing such heartbreaking and loving thing for her - this is the last and most protective thing you can do for her.
It is awfully hard for you, but the right thing to do for her; the most selfless act Thanks

Huge hugs.

We made the decision for our cocker spaniel in March. He was a few weeks shy of 15. The vet came to the house and did it.

He, and also a very dear friend said, better a day too early than a minute too late. That was a huge comfort, it was definitely his time.

We lost our younger a year earlier, just shy of 9, she was very ill very quickly and decision was made for us.

In time you'll look back and laugh at the nonsense, I promise.

So sorry ... it’s heartbreaking when you have to let them go.
When you say she’s had enough though, does she seem in pain? What’s her appetite like ?
The vet is probably right though, especially if he felt a pelvis mass.

We had to make the same decision a few weeks ago.

Our 15 year old, little jack Russell had dementia. We’d tried various medications but she was getting increasingly confused and distressed. The vet wanted to continue with trying other things. We had to be very strong and stand up for our dog. We told the vet that we were not going to let her suffer anymore.

It’s a traumatic decision to make but your dog is in pain. You’re doing the right thing in letting her go. Flowers

Thankyou to you all for your kind words im in tears mostly because this time tommorow she will be gone. Partly because of your words of comfort.

I feel so awful that we didnt get her to the vets during those 4 months i feel we were preoccupied with the bereavement and could have got her seen to much sooner.

The vet took one look at her and was very direct but not in an unkind way and said there was no point at all in an xray .

He did also say it would not of made a diffrence if we had taken her to the vets sooner there is nothing that could have been done we would of just known sooner. I dont think he was just being kind.

A part of me does think should we have just had her scanned to confirm things? As we are going purely on his experience and knowlege?. But i didnt doubt what he said . As soon as he said it it all added up sadly.

I know its too late in the day now to get her scanned. Shes so so poorly in pain. I tried tucking her blanket under her bottom earlier to cover her she screeched in pain Sad shes shivering alot i imagine lack of body mass as so thin you can see her ribs and spine.

There is another dog who she will be leaving behind, her mate. Hes older coming up 14 and its visable as greying muzzle slowing down alot and has put on loads of weight ( as we stopped her diet it stopped his) .

Up until last year with the toilet difficultys she was still full of energy and like a young dog still so enegetic and always up for a walk. It sounds unkind but it seems an unnatural order her passing before him. I dont know what he will do without her. Or any of us ... xx

Hi nopeas

Thats the odd thing her appetite has stayed pretty steady i did think was she dropping the weight due to loss of appetite as very possibly in pain?. I have paid a lot more attention and it seems she wants to eat but is too poorly to get out to her food herself so we have been bringing food to her. As soon as you do she eats it straight up and the same with water . .

You cant touch her where her hips are or anywhere around her bottom as she shriekes out . The vet gently lifted her tail just to take her temp and she really screeched out in pain. Its just awful.

Her eyes are really really sad and she looks so tired and worn out with it . And when shes not laying down shes looking around forlornly.

Xx

OP I am so sorry. What a heartbreaking decision to have to make. Are you having her put to sleep at home or at the vets? We had our lab put to sleep at home so our staff could say goodbye and so he was in his own bed and comfortable.
It often helps animals left behind if they can see and smell their deceased mate.
Sending you a big hug.

Thinking of you today. Make a huge fuss of your other dog, they will miss her. Our other dog was visibly upset for a week or two and needed a lot of cuddles.

I do still miss her, but time does dull the ache. We buried her under a tree in the garden and I go and talk to that.

If you ask your vet to come to the house then they should do that and take her away with them for cremation. That’s what minded. XX

Sorry op Sad i think you're right not to get her x rayed. If it showed up any potential for treatment then you would be agonizing over whether it's fair to put her through it or not. The way you describe her she's a very ill dog and I think that further treatment sometimes is for the owners benefit and not the animal.
