Hi

Can some one advice if it's possible to take a havanese dog on a two hour walk? Would it be too much?

Than you

Thanks for your advice

How old is the dog, and how much exercise does it normally have?

We really love the breed and are planning to get a puppy after careful consideration. He would normally get 3 walks a day of about 30 min during the week. It being a small breed I'm worried that a 2 Hour walk would be too much. I was wondering if ther havanese dog owners take their dogs on long walks.

Thank you

You'd need to build up - you can't take a puppy on walks that long as a youngster.

However, small breeds can usually cope with longer walks as adults. I used to have a papillon that considered 2 hours entirely doable (and a pomeranian that would sit down after 15 minutes in her dotage; there is an age limit on that sort of walk). My JRT cross considers 2 hours to be a bit on the short side and would frankly prefer double that.

No direct experience of havaneses though - hopefully someone who knows the breed will be along soon.

So long as you build up to it gently while the dog is young, he will be fine because he will slowly become fit enough to do that much walking. In fact, he will be better than fine because he will have a healthy and energetic lifestyle. Small dogs don't need less exercise than big ones (though some breeds are naturally more energetic than others).

Just be careful in temperature extremes, especially heat. He might not manage 2 hours in the midday sun without suffering...

Hi, op! I'm also looking to get a Havanese and was wondering the same thing.

From what I've googled and from what I've gleaned from (a small amount) of second hand info, it depends on the individual dog.

The other thing is separation anxiety. I would only leave it very occasionally, work from home. Again, depends on individual dog.

Is there a reason why you can't pop a Havanese inside your coat to carry it for a while if it gets tired OP?

I have two Havanese dogs and both of them would happily walk for two hours but as someone said up thread you can't walk them that long as a puppy.

I took my youngest one out for a 3 hour walk in the autumn although we did stop for lunch half way. He was fine although he was comatosed on the sofa for hours afterwards!

Mind you that's mine and I'm sure it depends on the individual dog. Mine are also used to being taken on long walks in a group by our dog walker across fields, streams etc. so used to a fair bit of exercise.

I always take water if the weather is hot.

Havanese are a lovely breed.

Once fully developed, pretty much any breed would be able to go for a 2 hour walk.
