Hello! Can I hop in please- we’re getting a puppy next week (if vet visit ok etc)! I’d be really grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of what we might need that I’ve not thought of. So far I’m thinking/have got
Bed
Crate
Chewy toys (v bitey but v friendly puppy)
Collar
Lead/harness
Food
Bowls
Brush
Shampoo
Poop bags
Insurance
Puppy classes

Have I forgotten anything?

How are you planning to restrain then in the car? I can't get a crate into mine so it's a doggy seatbelt.

Accident clean up spray - you'll need it and the specialist ones have enzymes to remove the smell so they aren't tempted to go again in the same spot....

And treats. Lots and lots and lots of treats!

I can’t drive for another 2 months, but planning to have a tether that fits into the seatbelt plug.

Accident clean up- hadn’t thought of that, thank you! And I’d forgotten treats....

Something to wear (you wear it, not the dog) that you can part with to put with him when you're not there. It'll smell like you.

Oh...and if you have cats, a litter box with a lid is a must! Dogs and cat crap...boak!

Report
dangermouseisace · 04/03/2018 21:28

...hadn't thought of something to wear- thanks allroads.

Luckily- no cats. I really want to erase from my brain the thoughts about cat poo and puppies that you've just put there...urgh

Oh and a squeaky toy is fantastic for getting his attention. This works to distract him from my husbands toes (his favorite chew toy).

Hello ThisIsThe - welcome to the mad house!

Elfpup is still on hunger strike. I have a freezer full of top quality raw food for him as well as 20 odd portions of cooked food. He won't eat any of it. The only thing holding his body and soul together is one brand and one flavour of kibble. If he stops eating that too then I don't know what I'll do!

I too dutifully have a freezer of raw food, I have nightmares about forgetting to defrost it in time. Thankfully the fluff monster eats anything so far.

Elphame you have my sympathy. It took us ages to find a food that BiteyDog ate and didn't get bored of. Fortunately we were able to always mix in a little of the old with the new so we didn't waste a lot of money.

Report
Elphame · 05/03/2018 19:46

Luckily Elfpup seems to have a cast iron digestive system so we don't have your complications. Just terrier pig headedness...

He did eat 100g tonight with kibble sprinkled on the top! I've got about 3 days left of the tester pack so I need to decide whether or not to put in a 10kg order tomorrow. It's a lot of money if he won't eat it.

Which raw food do you feed ThisIsThe?

Natural instinct or Cotswold raw. (Mainly because that is what she came ). I buy the complete meals i’m Not up for mixing it myself.

What ones does Elfpup have?

Report
Elphame · 05/03/2018 20:59

He's on Honey's. I like that they use top quality meat ethically produced - and yes it's also complete meals too. This is quite bad enough for a long term veggie to cope with as it is! They have excellent customer support and advice lines and if I did want to DIY then they can supply the necessary.

Just need to get the little toad eating. His order came with a free knuckle bone which he is loving.

Can I pop on for a whine, please?

I'm struggling with 11 hours on my own, stuck in every day, with just dpup for company.

DH doesn't get it...he gets the "good" bits (nice calm puppy when he and DC come home...the "aw!" side of DPup because I've knackered her out in the day so all ahe wants to do is cuddle, etc, etc)

Feed, play, crap, sleep, rinse and repeat.

And the whole fucking world and his wife texting me with "helpful" advice (we had ours potty trained at 8 weeks, you need to rub her nose in it! Um...noooooo! That's cruel!)

Positives?

I've hit my 10,000 steps every day since she came home, just running around after her!

Someone in this house FINALLY eats lunch without arguing, making a mess, or whining that we've run out of ketchup...and is GRATEFUL! I give her kibble, she looks at me like I've given her the world!

Feed, play, crap, sleep, rinse and repeat...it's a routine! Yay me! 😁

So, what should I be expecting/doing at ten weeks? She's sleeping thtough the night, shits outside, sits, stays, and "leaves it".

Also, has anyone woken up to find a pup who is twice as big as the one you put to bed? Ok, exaggeration, but she's definitely bigger!

She's havinf her second shits at the vets on Saturday...excited about being able to take her for walks! Can I ask how long everyone waited for that first walk, after your pup had their shots?

Checking in... DelshPup is 9 weeks, is doing great at sleeping and eating, walked to town in a backpack yesterday, bit of socialisation training!! In answer to the walks after vacc question, we were told 2 weeks after, meaning 14 weeks. However the puppy backpack is fab!

Also Radley.... maybe start leaving pup alone for periods while you pop to the shops etc? Get him used to the car... take him on a road trip? So long as he pees and poos on a mat and you don't put him on the ground you will be fine? There is a great training book by Di Williamson which will give you the next training steps.

I'm 4'10" with a husky x...do you think the backpack is feasable? If so, I'm buying one!
