Puppy sleeping bedroom am I doomed forever?

7 month old pup used to sleep 10 til 5am in crate then started waking regularly in the night. Stopped using crate and this helped although still up at 5am but then started waking at 1am, 3am and 5am.

I'm knackered and not coping well with all this broken sleep so have caved in and brought him into the bedroom. He's slept through 10pm til 6.30am the last couple of nights. I'm buggered for the next to fifteen years aren't I? I honestly don't know what else to do though I'm not a "leave them to cry and bark" type of person.

My dogs have always slept in my bedroom, couldn't imagine them not to be honest. What if there was a fire and they were stuck in the kitchen Sad

They do still sleep in a crate though (that fits perfectly into an older fireplace alcove). Just because they prefer it and one of them would walk around all night and scratch at the door if I let him!

BiteyShark · 16/01/2018 13:38

When I got rid of the crate I bought the dog into our bedroom although he does sleep on the floor.

Is it that you don't want him in the bedroom? If not could you put up a baby gate at the door and see if he will sleep on the landing knowing he can see you and take it from there?

monkeywithacowface · 16/01/2018 13:44

I don't mind him in the bedroom to be honest but his crate would be too big. I would like to get him sleeping on his own bed on the floor but he is a lurcher and it would appear beds and sofa's are his birthright Hmm

You either needed to sleep next to him where you want him to sleep as an adult or bring him to your room. You've done the right thing.
And yes. Sofas and beds are his right! Grin

Mine is allowed on the spare bed but not on my bed. I only let him in initially when I was in there and every time he chanced it by jumping on the bed he was told off and now never tries and just goes on his bed on the floor.

Our pup cried all night long in the kitchen. We caved and took her into our room in a crate, but when she was spayed and couldn't go up stairs, she got used to sleeping in the kitchen (no choice, really). She stays downstairs all the time now, because the cats need to escape her attentions from time to time.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 16/01/2018 13:52

When I first got mine I was adamant that she wouldn't sleep in the bedroom but she was a rescue and kept weeing when we came downstairs (submissive) so my ex suggested she slept upstairs so she wasn't "surprised" in the morning and it worked! I took her bed up with me every night until I lost her last year - for 16.5 years. So yes, you're buggered!

ButFirstTea · 16/01/2018 13:52

Our dog sometimes sleeps on our bed, particularly over Christmas when we were staying with family and his routine was upset. He was really unsettled so we allowed him into the bedroom and he slept with us for a few nights in various different houses. When we got back home he went back into his own bed in the living room with no issues at all! I think it depends on the individual dog, definitely.

monkeywithacowface · 16/01/2018 13:52

I was also worried that by having him with me at night he would struggle when left alone in the day (only 2 hours max)

Forgot to say - your sleeping arrangement may not be permanent! I thought we'd be stuck with a dog in our bedroom, staring at us, forever! :) But no.

BiteyShark · 16/01/2018 14:08

Mine sleeps in same room at night and I leave him alone for around 2.5 hours around 3 times a week so I don't think it has any bearing on that.

Elphame · 16/01/2018 15:00

Can you get him back in the crate in your bedroom? Give it a few days of unbroken nights then start moving the crate a few feet away from your bedroom each night. It took me about 10 days to get Elfpup from my bedroom to the kitchen where he know sleeps

Hillingdon · 16/01/2018 15:12

Its difficult isn't it. Its your bedroom and your choice. My DS when she came to stay brought her dog and then allowed him upstairs and onto the bed.... He was a very large staffy.

Our dogs are not allowed upstairs and in fact both dogs seem to be scared of the stairs so that was lucky.

lifechangesforeverinjuly · 16/01/2018 15:15

Also my dogs are left alone all day whilst we're at work and have a dog walker that comes to take them out. They're completely fine but they do also have eachother for company.

Roll on maternity leave when I get to be with them all day (albeit probably very stressed with them both & a newborn!)

Our dog sleeps on my bed and I don't think he'll ever move now! When we got him as a puppy, the plan was that he'd sleep in the sitting room in his puppy pen (covered with a blanket to make it a den). After a week of sleeping in the sitting room to reassure him we tried leaving him on his own and he cried and barked for an hour - at which point the neighbours were getting rather annoyed so we moved the puppy pen into my room and he slept really well there. fast forward about 6 months though and he was waking me up in the small hours every night, just like your, monkeywithacowface I started letting him onto the bed and hey presto, a full night's sleep again! He's a miniature poodle so doesn't take up much space and it's only him and me in a double bed - he will happily sleep through from 10.30/11 at night until 7 or later and he's clearly going through the teenage stage as is often refusing to get out of bed in the morning at the moment!! Not sure if I'd want a bigger/snoring/farting pooch on my bed every night - but as a friend said to me recently, I'd possibly get far worse with a husband Grin

FoxesAreFabulous · 16/01/2018 15:26

Forgot to add - our boy is perfectly happy being left for up to 4 hours so having your dog in with you at night shouldn't affect how they are when left during the day

monkeywithacowface · 16/01/2018 15:41

I can't fit his crate in the bedroom it's huge and tbh he's a typical lurcher that likes to sleep flat on his back legs everywhere so I think he will strongly object to the crate again!

My dog sleeps on the beds , he’s in with us until about MN / 1 am and then he goes in with ds when I go to sleep . It makes no difference to him being left during the day when we need to .

mustbemad17 · 16/01/2018 15:46

Yeah, you're screwed 😆 All of mine have slept in the bedroom, either on the floor next to the bed or on the actual bed. I miss it now!

Eifla · 16/01/2018 18:50

Mine started in the kitchen as a puppy, 14 years later and he’s actually in the bed.

Would have future dogs in the bedroom but definitely not in the bed.

Chippyway · 16/01/2018 20:26

I slept downstairs when I first got my pup after a while she then went into the kitchen when I went back into my bedroom. She was fine

One night I took her upstairs in my room with me and she slept on my bed. I then started bringing her up every night

when my partner stays over however she goes back into the kitchen as there’s not enough room on the bed. She’s absolutely fine still

She’s a gsd there’s no chance she would fit on the bed with me and DP, however she would insist she could Grin
