Greyhound coming for home check tomorrow

After years of desperately wanting a dog we are having a home check with the Greyhound Trust tomorrow and I just want to share my excitement with you all! I went along to the kennels on Monday with my toddler and was matched to a very handsome 4 year old blonde haired ex racer that has been around the volunteer's young grandchildren. We took him for a walk and I just fell in love!

Thank you, I've had mixed reactions from people about my choice if breed but I've heard such wonderful things about them. Apparently he doesn't like to wear a coat and shrugs out of them but it's so cold here I really need to find one that will stay on.

Well done. They all deserve a chance of a loving home, and so many don't. I absolutely love greyhounds, wasn't sure at first but they grow on you so much.

Congratulations! I've just rehomed an ex-racer from the Greyhound trust too, I've had him three weeks tomorrow and I'm utterly smitten. They are fantastic pets and he's settled in so easily, he practically housetrained himself. And they do wear such lovely collars!

We have Lurchers, would never have been my choice of ddog but omg they are amazing. Never mind old cat lady I have told dh we will have loads of Lurchers!!

Congratulations! I feel excited for you! My huge ex-racing greyhound was the best friend I could ever have wished for myself and my family. He came to us from a rescue when my youngest dc were 4 and 2 and was never anything other than gentle, kind and patient towards them. He didn't bat an eyelid when over the years another 2 dc arrived. Cohabited peacefully with 3 cats (who would bully him dreadfully given half the chance). Never demanding, endlessly grateful. Love my boy. Lost him (old age) just over a year ago and miss him so much my heart aches. I could never have another breed, if I was choosing a dog again it would always have to be a greyhound (I do have a lurcher now - but he chose us (long story!) and he's half grey so I'll forgive him )

Try an equafleece jumper instead of a jumper. Only one way out of those and it’s taught with an instructional video!

It's lovely to hear such good things about them, I feel more excited than the children at Christmas.

I also have an ex racer, she really is the cheekiest most charming and lovable girl I've ever had. I bought her fleece jumpers by Ginger Ted as we live in the North East of Scotland and it can get very cold here, I've never had a problem with her taking them off. Good luck and enjoy!!!

Have you been able to let them off the lead? My friend has one and he can't be off lead,can't be around cats and I couldn't introduce my dog until he was larger than a small cat. He tolerates my dog now. Are they just unlucky or are most greyhounds on lead only?

Mine is lead only, it's as much for her safety as anything else, her prey drive is so high that if she was off lead and a small animal ran in her line of vision she'd be off and it wouldn't matter to her if she had to chase across a busy road she'd just go for it.

We have 2 cats and the dogs love them. Though we had the cats first - they are totally under the paw!! One fast move and dcats bat them away!! They have been known to share food (steal tbh!)

If you search for Estee Lalonde on youtube, she and her boyfriend rescued a greyhound a fey years ago and he's such a sweet dog. I think she has a whole video on there about adopting him.

My girl is off lead in fields and parks. She’s amazing, the model dog. She loves a zoomie then always comes back for a congratulations well done. Her brother raced longer and is more institutionalised and unpredictable so isn’t always on lead out and about. They’re on Instagram as bluemagroo.

If the area is secure (ish) then off lead should be fine. Our boy used to leave the other dog walkers open mouthed with amazement when they saw him go. He used to race around with his lurcher friend, was lovely to watch.

As for getting him settled. put his bed in a nice quiet corner so he can take himself off if it all gets too much for him. Don't invade his space when he is on his bed/chilling out, all our greys have been quite territorial of their beds, maybe something to do with kennel life. Also they can sleep with theirs eyes open so you may think he's awake but he actually isn't.

There are loads of little quirks but nice quirks.
