One of my relatives has told me today that for the past couple evenings, someone has been leaving a dog tied to a lampost in her street for a couple of hours.
It is just a residential street, there are no shops or businesses, so its not like they are just nipping in somewhere and the dog is waiting.

Relative is older so I wouldn't want to ask her to approach whoever it is, and I'm not able to be there at those times to approach the person or see if the dog looks neglected. Relative said the dog was kind of hanging its head low, and I've seen too many sad rescue videos that sound similar.

I've asked her to ring me if it happens tonight, I'll be at work, and maybe I will ring a rescue or dog wardens but I don't know if its a good idea? The only dog rescue I know of is RSPCA and they haven't been helpful in the past, not sure if dog wardens will end up PTS if no one collects?

I used to live in the area too, and there were so many neglected cats etc that I've rescued and rehomed, so it wouldn't suprise me if there are neglected dogs also.

I don't know many dog people myself, so not sure if this is normal thing to do? As I said its not like its 5 minutes at the front of the shop. I'm a bit of a cynic (seen to many neglected animals) so I automatically think they're trying to abandon it.

Should I do something or mind my own business?

I'm only guessing but in my area I think the dog warden would put the into the council kennels. I don't know if he/she would assume the dog was abandoned or try to locate the owner first.
If not claimed after a week, it would then be put up for rehoming. It certainly wouldn't be put to sleep.

Personally I'd ring 101 police non-emergency and speak to them and ask them what do to. Had to speak to them about something and they were very helpful and you are not blocking the emergency line. Some areas eg mine does not have a dog warden (Council cut backs) and yes RSPCA are not always helpful/available. Poor thing.

thanks both, I have looked up the info for the wardens in my area, and they will come out for strays etc. I'd seen some posts on here that they can pts if not collected so I was worried.

Meant to say, I think you would be doing the right thing.
I'm in Scotland, where I think the SSPCA is rather different in attitude from the RSPCA, but if you have a dog warden, I would hope they would be interested.

I recently contacted our local dog warden to collect a stray/ abandoned frightened lurcher which we managed to feed and bring into our garden. She was desperate for food. Turns out she was pregnant and had 7 pups a few weeks ago. She is safe and well and pups up for rehoming.
