Picking up our new pup next week when she will be about 10 weeks old. Have been in regular contact with the breeder who has had dogs of the breed for decades and appears to be an expert - we're not experts. DH had a dog previously but got her at about 9 months so didn't do the whole puppy thing.

Pup has been chipped, registered and insured. We have been advised to take her to the vet as the breeder hadn't started the vaccination programme as different vets use different brands of vaccine and it's best to use the same vet for them all? Local vet excellent but says to leave a few days to let her settle in before bringing her for jabs.

Is this ok?? Worried about unvaccinated pup! Know to keep her in, and we have no other dogs or pets.

It is recommended to complete a primary vaccine course with the same brand of vaccines. We would also recommend letting a pup settle for a few days in a new home before vaccinating. The flip side is it leaves her quite late to be getting out and about for socialisation. She will be ok going out 'in arms' to meet people, see traffic etc, and if you have friends with a vaccinated dog they can come and visit. Ask your vet about the vaccine schedule and when the puppy can go out. We use a vaccine where 2 injections of DHP (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus) can be given at 2 week interval and pup can go out a week later, but the L (lepto) needs a 4 week interval so you need to be careful about exposure to rats/ water for longer.

Until now she has been with the breeder's other adult dogs and two of her siblings which the breeder is keeping. With three kids in the house desperate to spend time with her and cuddle her the poor wee thing will need her space!

We do have friends with vaccinate dogs so that's an option too.
