Dog needs ear canal removed due to tumour

Any experiences?

Lab has had an ear infection off and on since Dec. Vet took her in in Friday and had a good look under sedation and took some swabs. E also noticed a polyp which he took a sample of and sent off. Not expecting it to be anything. But he phoned the morning to say it is a tumour.

He says they need to remove the ear canal. She will be deaf in that ear but he said you generally don't notice much difference as she will be ok in the other ear obv.

They will test lymph glands around to check if it's spread. He doesn't think so but then again he didn't think the polyp was a tumour so who knows.

She is an almost 7 year old cheeky bouncy hyper black lab who thinks she is a kangaroo.

Have insurance so costs covered so not worried about that.

Just worried about putting her through what sounds like a very invasive op.

No experience I am afraid but hopefully bumping the thread might find someone who does.

Hope the operation goes ok and it is heartbreaking when they are ill Flowers

Oh you poor thing. I'm sure it will be fine. I have a nearly 7 year old lab who is also a bouncy ball of fun. She had hugely radical surgery a few years ago - think 2 dogs a year have the procedure - and she was fine after convalescing.
Dogs generally do recover remarkably well from surgery.
Best wishes.

It is indeed a painful operation.
However, she will pull through, and she's only seven, so very worthwhile.
Lots of quiet time, and gentle snuggles will be in order !

Sorry I haven't been back to the thread. Thanks for replies.

Quiet time and gentle snuggles not usually in her repertoire Sugarpie! Bless her. She thinks she is a kangaroo. With ADHD.

Haven't heard back from vet yet to arrange op. He was getting in touch with a soft tissue specialist. Will chase today.
