Teaching your dog to walk nicely on the lead

How long does it normally take to train a puppy to walk on a lead without pulling? The first week that I took her out I let her walk how she wanted. I'm now trying to train her to walk without pulling, so I'm only doing walks of about 100 yards. I'm going to try again tomorrow with a clicker, just wandered how long this usually takes, and how others managed it? Has anyone got any good tips? My puppy is 13 weeks old.

Quite a while ime and just when you think you've cracked it and are feeling smug they turn into teenagers and everything goes to pot again..,

While you're training don't try and walk anywhere in particular - if you can, you're better off driving somewhere and letting your pup have a lovely offlead run and then keep training walks short and focused. You want to avoid your pup practising pulling at all costs.

My dog is 3 now and walks beautifully on a lead - however I don't insist on perfect heel work all the time (we do obedience training so walking to heel means something very specific). When we're walking to the park, he's on a harness and 6' lead and as long as it's safe he's allowed to bumble along at the end of the lead as long as it's not tight. If he goes too far and the lead tightens he's learned to stop and come back to heel

Keep going - it will come eventually
