Puppy teething and ear setting - is there a proper explanation for this?

I am trying to find some information on puppy teething and ear setting. I have searched the internet and all I can find is anecdotal stories and some unscientific ideas from various dog breed forums.
It seems to be a commonly held fact that teething puppies often experience changes in their ear set that may or may not return to normal when the teething settles down but I can't find a reasonable explanation as to why. There seem to be two theories - firstly that it is due to calcium being needed in higher supply. But this doesn't really explain the ear cartilage changing which seems to be what many are putting the ear changes down to. Secondly there is a theory about chewing and how chewing on one side only could cause lopsidedness. I can't quite see this as an explanation but I do think that it is more of a muscular problem than cartilage.
I am hoping that someone can point me towards a paper that can explain this teething ear connection?
