If you could have any dog breed in the world...

What would you have? We already have 2 amazing dogs and are contemplating a 3rd. I'd love to hear about your favourite dog breeds (or cross breeds) and why.

I have my dream dog, she is an Irish Terrier. They are not for the inexperienced owner I think as they can be very challenging as puppies and they seem to stay a puppy well into their second year .
Ours is happy and sassy and calm and gentle, she is also very clever. She makes us laugh every day and she adores the DC. She hardly ever barks but she loves biting ankles.
We are devoted to her.

We also have our dream dog. A greyhound. Very affectionate and loving, very funny, don't need lots of exercise, beautiful faces with ears that have a mind of their own, will do anything for a treat. Unfortunately they're not well endowed in the intelligence department but their sheer joy at being alive makes up for it.

German Shepherd.

We have a German Shepherd X Golden Retriever at the moment and he is amazing, but growing up I always had pure GSDs. They're amazing dogs.

Everyone thinks their own dog is the best. Like children .

Oh I didn't say why.

Our current dog is a rescue. He is bright, affectionate, loyal, gentle and kind. This week we stupidly left the front door open then drove into town. Our opposite neighbour phoned DH to say that he'd wandered across to her gate. That's it. He didn't run away. He didn't explore the neighbourhood. He didn't go up onto the main road. He just went to her gate to say hello.

He's great with cats, chickens, you name it, he's great with it. He's fabulous.

BT's are little balls of energy. Tough dogs but not yappy. Can be walked 10 miles or 2 depending on your mood. Great natured. Loves a cuddle. Very opinionated and spirited. Doesn't dribble. Has a hardy coat. Healthy breed history.

I would love an old English sheepdog. I have no experience of them but I just always think they look amazing. In reality I would be beside myself with the dirt. We live on a farm and I couldn't cope with mud being sprayed up the kitchen walls. I have a Doberman, he is our 4th and a springer. She is our first spaniel.

Visla. But I'd never actually have one because they need an energetic outdoorsy type of lifestyle owner (the suburban ones I met are always stir-crazy). And I'm one that type of person.

Rhodesian ridgeback. Also admire them from afar but unless I lived in the US or somewhere with similarly huge houses, I wouldn't want a dog that huge trying to navigate a typical uk house.

Deerhound. But I'd need to be a Laird and wear tweed all the time and strut about with a pack of them at my heels. Beautiful dogs.

Whatever seems most pathetic, I have form for this I went looking for a shorthaired tom cat as a pet and came him with a long haired practically feral 11 month old female with a gippy leg. I am the person who should NEVER be allowed to select a rescue animal but should there be an incontinent, belligerent 3 legged mongrel that desperately needs a home, I'm your girl....

Alpaca blue blooded bulldog. I can't afford one, but my God are they beautiful.

We have a miniature labradoodle and she is completely fab. I've been looking at golden doodles, as we had a golden retriever before and they are wonderful dogs.

The beauty of a cross is that they're healthier, generally and the doodles shed less.

A regular or giant Schnauzer - Salt and Pepper. Had a miniature and he was an absolute star. Would love one like him in a bigger size.

I've got whippets and they're pretty much my ideal breed.

They're such lovely, funny, happy little souls. They're so affectionate and gentle but also have a real playful, goofy streak. They're very flexible when it comes to exercise. They're intelligent without needing vast amounts of mental stimulation and are pretty biddable as far as sighthounds go. They're generally a very healthy breed and much more robust than they look. They're amazingly athletic and it's absolutely breathtaking to watch them in full flight. They're a nice size, big enough to stroke easily in passing but small enough to scoop up and cuddle. They have minimal grooming requirements, have lovely wipe clean coats and barely shed. Finally they also come in a huge array of very pretty colours

All that said...........

I do have a huge hankering for a Cirneco dell'Etna. Traditionally rabbit hunters like whippets though not true sighthounds as they hunt by hearing and scent as well. They're more primitive in nature than whippets and generally have a bit more "oomph". Like whippets they're very affectionate, gentle and love their home comforts. They're a similar size and also have nice, easy care coats. Very robust and healthy plus they're absolutely stunning to look at. All the ones I've met have been lovely little things, I am seriously tempted for the future.

I think crossbreeds are best.

Especially lurchers, or anything with a bit of greyhound or whippet in it.

Collie-greyhound cross are gorgeous

whippet-deerhounds, whippet-beddies, or my own greyhound-deerhound-whippet-beddie cross, which is obviously the best

Heinz 57s are good too.
