Our border terrier cross is a keen little firework. He's my teenage son's dog really and he hasn't trained him not to pull. I have taken the matter into my own hands as it's unpleasant walking a pulling dog but I've bought the head collar and have tried just putting it on him in the house to get used to it and he hates it.. Pulls it off with his paws, rolls on the floor etc until it's off. Am I being optimistic trying to use this at this late stage? When we've used body harnesses, he's escaped from those too. I'm disheartened as I work full time and know that training is important. Any advice most appreciated on the next course of action.

Most dogs find head collars aversive unless they are carefully conditioned to wearing one.

You would be better off with a harness such as the Dog Games Perfect Fit and a double ended lead.

Also google the 300 peck method for teaching loose leash walking.

I'm with LilCamper, I'd much rather use a harness when teaching loose lead walking for the reasons explained here.

If escaping from harnesses is an issue you need something with an extra belly strap like the Ruffwear Webmaster, Indi-Dog Houdini Ultra or Sowinka Design anti-escape harnesses.

The Indi-Dog harnesses in particular are great as they can have an extra ring added to the front for use with a double ended lead.
