Today we brought home our rescue dog, she is lovely she the black streak of energy we have been missing. She has taken to me dh and the kids ...everyone except b-cat is happy to see her.
We have also learnt that despite her size she can somehow squeeze through the cat flap. So when b cat made her appearance she hissed and bolted and dog followed.
Cat is now under our bed dog sleeping in his in different rooms.

Can anyone suggest ways we can help them become friends? Or at least tolerate each other.

I am a little bit in love with dog already but b-cat came first I just want them to get on.

Dogs previous owner said she had no problems with cats I am not sure if it was because she ran dog wanted to chase?

Our cats were Not At All Impressed when we brought our puppy home... for the first week dcat2 (big, string ex-street cat) ran every time he saw the dog while dcat1 would wait until the puppy was asleep and then sit right in front of his crate glaring at him. However they both realised very soon that the dog was about as threatening as a cuddly toy Grin

It helped that there'd been a very no-nonsense cat living with the breeder so ddog respected cats who stand their ground

Now the cats live in relative harmony with the dog. He's mostly submissive towards them (won't look them in the eye, won't push past them etc) and on the rare occasions when he forgets himself a swift hiss or paw swipe reminds him of his true station in life ...

My brother had dogs after having cats. They put a stairgate on the living room door so the cats could have some space away from the dogs. The dogs did get their noses scratched a few times but it didn't do them any harm lol.

It takes time. After over a year my cat is still not impressed with the dog but he tolerates him and does his best to pretend the dog is not here. We make sure he has a save place from the dog. If they meet the dog gets scratched but he seems to think it's a game Confused.

Cat hasn't come home yet? Think she is hiding out at the neighbours. ( will check later when they are home)

Doesn't help that despite her size dog can fit through the cat flap
