He's 8, but a big dog with a life expectancy of 10.
In the past year he has had 6 seizures, which a seem to occur out of the blue and last for 30secs to a minute.
Vet has prescribed diazepam but I cant forsee a seizure so cant give it to him beforehand and he's too wound up afterwards that 30mins has gone by before he takes it covered in marmite.
What do you think is causing them?
He's had blood tests and xrays which are al clear besides the mild beginnings of arthritis.
He gets a lot of ticks, so I'n wondering lyme disease? Any experience on this anyone?

Can the vet subscribe him something a bit more long-term like phenoleptol? My epileptic dog takes that twice daily and only has diazepam to calm her down after a fit

Thanks mrs they're happening so infrequently that we're not sure what is causing them and whether it is epilepsy. He's had 6 within a year period. I'm going to hive the vet a call in the morningb and will mention what you have suggested. Thanks

6 within a year isn't infrequent - I'd definitely chase up the vet! The aim is to keep seizures a minimum of 3-4 months apart, so 6 in 12 months is less than ideal. I hope you get it sorted!

Currently guidelines adv. full work up if more than 2 seizures in 6months. There are definitely far better meds than diazepam available for preventing seizures.
