Kennel cough

Dry heaving, like something is caught in throat, runny nose and one glob of mucus coughed up - sound like kennel cough?

Is it always best to go to the vets or do you just ride it out at home, I'm getting conflicting advice.

Thanks

Unless the dog is actually ill I wouldn't go to the vet unless it's not improving after a few days , you can give them baby cough medicine which most seem to like - mine always has tixylix .

I'd ride it out unless the dog is very young or old of frail.
Must dogs with good immunity recover by themselves.

Interesting read.

If you do decide to go to vets let them know in advance, it's likely they'll ask you to keep him outside in the car and they'll come out to you.

For goodness sake......contact the vet and follow their instructions...I cannot believe you are actually asking this on here instead of asking the vets!!!!!

Alright love, chill.

Said carry on as normal but keep away from being in close confines with other dogs. So long as it's eating and drinking etc then just let it run its course. Very glad I didn't book an appointment and get fleeced.

I also use kids cough mixture, and give a high dose vit c as some studies suggest it helps speed recovery

Book an appointment and get fleeced? Hmm
Odd way of looking at it. Maybe make an appointment for kennel cough vaccination when he/she is better?

Some honey is good if your dog will lick it off a spoon. The vaccine is useless, wouldn't bother with it. My dog still caught it after the vaccination and I know of another 3 dogs who had it too and were all vaccinated against it.
A vet I used to walk with in my local park said it's a waste of time too and she doesn't give it to her dogs.

Both times I've been to the vet with it (different dogs) he's given them an anti inflammatory injection. That worked with one dog (i.e. eased the symptoms and reduced the inflammation around the neck) but not the other. Time and rest sorted the second!
