Best way to take puppy out in car?

I have a beautiful 8 week old puppy, and was wondering how people have found is the best way to take them out and about in the car? I know when they're older you can either use a crate in the boot or a harness clipped to the seatbelt, but what is suitable for a little pup? So far I've taken her to the vet in a pet carrier on the back seat of the car so she could still see me - thought the boot might freak her out a bit! Advice welcome!

I used to take mine out in a carrier strapped into the front seat (seatbelt through the handle and wrapped round it). He was facing me and fine, but he was a small terrier in a small carrier .... Much bigger and his crate wouldn't have fitted across the seat...

We used to take out pup to the cars in a laundry basket strapped into the back seat with my DS sitting next to him to keep him amused. Probably not the best option, but it worked for us. Dog now sits in the boot with a harness on staring out of the back window making daft noises whenever we go out with him.

Thank you! I have been putting a carrier in the middle seat between children but it's difficult to get the seatbelt to fit around it and I'm worried about it sliding off! Will have a look today and try and come up with something!

Our Yorkie is 6mo but still small. He goes into a catbox on the front seat with the seatbelt around it.
