dog is sick, my fault. hand hold?

Ddog is at the vet for a possible gut obstruction. Gave him a stupid bone last night and it looks like he's swallowed a big chunk. I feel terrible. Anyone out there to hold my hand while I wait for X-ray results?

Oh you poor thing. Try not to give yourself too much of a hard time - you can't predict every eventuality. I hope he's ok. When will you have X-ray results back? What sort of bone was it?

Thanks. I'm feeling guilty because I didn't supervise even though it's a type of bone he hadn't had before, and I normally would know better than that. Got distracted with toddler teatime and left him to it. It was a cheapo dog's ham bone from the supermarket. I thought he'd just knaw on it - it looked massive - ten mins later he's eaten the huge knuckles off both ends.

The irony is I bought it because it was such good value - after X-ray and sedation it's looking pretty expensive now

X-ray looks promising, sounds like it may be laxatives rather than surgery. Cross fingers that does the trick

I hope your dog is feeling better. It's not your fault that your dog hoofed the whole thing in one go, unless you were there shoving it into his mouth with all your might. I agree with AnUtterIdiot that you been unlucky. Dogs...

Those bones are hideous! Ddog had one once and ate the whole thing in about 30 minutes- he was ridiculously thirsty afterwards (they're very high in salt) and had liquid poo for the next three days safe to say he's never had one since ...

think they can sell anything for animals to eat/chew... my poor ddog had the same awful reaction of liquid eliminations for days and nearly dying from thirst!

these bones should never have come on the market, please don't blame yourself they are horrendous and we can't just know all the drawbacks of everything that arrives on the pet market there's loads of dodgy stuff they'll try to sell if they can get away with it i reckon.

Thanks for the moral support, it really helps! X-ray showed no bone in the stomach, so that's good, but it's all backed up in his bowel and won't come out

As a result he's miserable and getting dehydrated, so he's been kept in overnight for fluids and, if no progress by he morning, an enema. Poor dog, he's never even been in kennels overnight. Flipping hambones - never again!

Still waiting to hear how he got on overnight. My local vet doesn't have overnight cover so he's at a bigger branch several miles away. Want him back now

Well, it seems in the end they gave him some ketamine and dealt with the problem manually, as it were

One more night at the vet and home tomorrow. I don't think he'll be too keen on trips to the vet from now on, but he should otherwise be ok.

Glad he's on the mend - if he had ketamine he won't remember a thing - dh had it in the ambulance when he broke his hip and said it was good stuff
