Still open as far as I know, I can't see the signing bit but I assume that's because I've already signed! Think it was right down the bottom of the page though if that helps?

They are from my hometown Sad
Everyone there is disgusted and keeping a close eye out for them. I do hope the police are keeping tabs, it wouldn't surprise me if they could do the same to a human.

Roseberry - I'm not a violent person but I hope to god there are people in your neighbourhood who might feel inclined to give these two worthless pieces of scum a taste of their own medicine. And I hope the police are 'too busy' to intervene.

How could any court give a SUSPENDED sentence for inflicting such a horrific assault on a helpless dog. I haven't watched the video and don't intend to. The still I saw in the newspaper was enough for me.

I can't look at it, but as I posted in another thread (and shortly after it happened) I saw my neighbours throw their dog to the concrete drive then kick it (with their child watching passively). No-one could do anything because I didn't film it. I'm still haunted by what I saw and if I could find a way of naming and shaming them I would.

Instead, all I can do is tell everyone round here I can and hope someone makes their lives very uncomfortable. When I was a kid in the 60s people like that were run out of town, quite literally. I don't get why they aren't now.

Animal cruelty is one of those ones where the courts and law haven't caught up with public opinion. They should.

Yellow the AIBU was moved to Petitions. The Chat was deleted as a TAAT.

Joffrey it beggars belief that animals are still maltreated in this way.
I did watch the video (cannot now un-see) this was premeditated and calculated, and from what I could make out from the reaction of the dog, probably not an isolated incident Angry

I couldn't hurt a dog. I loved my dog. Treated him like a person cooked him special meals I can't bear to see any dog treated like that. They are mans best friend.

I don't want to look because I think I know what it is. Is it the two men in a northern town with a bull breed?

70 - that's a shame. I didn't know there was a petitions site and now I know I still can't find it. Not very helpful of MN. Surely the whole point is to have a thread in a busy place like chat or aibu to get as many people as possible to see it? What is TAAT?

Over 400k signatures now I see

I don't think petitions work with regards to changes the outcome of criminal proceedings- is there even an avenue by which this could be used to change their sentences?

Awful people though

Report
stonecircle · 04/04/2016 08:29

I thought the point of the petition was to seek a review of the sentence. According to the person who started the petition, the local MP has written to Michael Gove as minister for justice to this effect. 21 weeks is pathetic and why it should be suspended I can't imagine.

I'm hoping however that, even if it doesn't succeed in changing the sentence the petition helps to keep the case in the public eye. Hopefully as a result of that somebody will recognise the 2 men and beat the living shit out of them. I hope they're living in fear of that happening anyway - which is some sort of poetic justice.

Signed it a while back. There is no way I could watch the video though.

If either if those to pieces of filth crossed my path there would be 'consequences'.

The dog my neighbours attacked was a black lab (so called 'Tyson' - hilarious, eh?)

He just looked cowed and terrified. The whole thing took a matter of seconds. But the way the neighbours' three year old little girl just stood between the parents (both of whom assaulted the dog) and watched as if nothing was happening, was what keeps me awake at night.

Also North Yorkshire. If you're reading this and know of a black lab called 'Tyson' (there can't be many) that was PTS a few months back after what you were probably told was the sudden onset on cancer (in fact it was a threatened RSPCA visit, and the dog had advanced cancer by the time he was taken the the vets - he was assaulted for being too slow to get out of the car...boot) - you should examine your conscience and think about things you may have seen or heard. And go to the police. One person witnessing = nothing ever happened, according to the RSPCA. But your complaint, added to our's? We need to get these people away. Both of them. The woman and the man. Both assaulted the dog.

Incidentally, RSPCA Inspector told me that there was a recent conviction not far from here where the man got 6 months in jail - as a neighbour filmed him kicking his dog. When the RSPCA came out, there wasn't a mark on the dog (which is also how my neighbours got away with it). But there was the film. So these men's sentences do seem to be derisory, if someone else got 6 months in chokey for a one-off incident...

These idiots filmed themselves, from what I've read (can't watch the video). But my neighbours have got away with it because I didn't film them. It happened in seconds and my phone was downstairs although by the time I'd have booted it up, it would have been too late.

What gets me about this is - if they were brothers, where were their family (did their parents buy the dog?) and why didn't they realise the dog was being hurt?

I don't think Michael give reviews sentences on the basis of petitions from the public, is what I meant. I can't see how they can undermine the courts and justice system like that.

Nothing will happen but at least people get to voice their disgust, and hopefuly that judge will think long and hard before handing down such a sketchy sentence in the future?

I often think petitions won't change anything, but at least those in power are faced with some uncomfortable truths. On the other hand, some recent petitions fro people like 38 Degrees have made a tangible difference, and pulled up conceited politicians in their tracks. There is often a disconnect between the law/legislators and the public, and if facing them with people's opinions is embarrassing to them - tough.

At least they can later be proven not to listen to public opinion, too, which helps when getting an out of touch government out of government, ultimately...
