Best vacuum cleaner for dog hair?

Our beagle sheds white hair all the time, current vacuum (Henry) is not very effective and picks up very little. The guy who steam cleans my carpets said upright hoovers much better, as less distance from suction to bag. Can anyone recommend a really good, powerful vacuum that gets pet hair off the carpets? (With the Henry, I have to get down on hands and knees and scrub with the nozzle!) Would also like one that I can use for washing, but not sure if this reduces their effectiveness. Any recommendations?

Having a black dog/cat and beige carpets I sympathise. I too had a Henry and bought the extra head brush from ebay thinking that was the best I could get but even that left hair that I could only seem to remove by rubber brush afterwards. Exhausting. THEN I paid out for an AirRam K9 and have never looked back! Expensive but worth EVERY penny!

I'm just about to purchase another for my son after buying one for my daughter earlier this year.

I brush the dog every day and finish by going over him with a damp flannel. For the carpets and furniture I bought a silicon rubber brush from Asda, £3. It gets every hair up but it makes you feel like you live in the old days.

I swear, short dog hairs are the worst. They work their way in to the fibres of the fabric. I'm pretty sure everyone who recommends a short coated dog for people who dislike grooming have never lived with one!

I can't say it's 'the best', but we've recently swapped our upright in for a Miele Cat and Dog. It was expensive, the bags are expensive, and the filters are expensive, BUT it really does work a million times better than our old one.

DH was really sceptical about both the cost and getting a non upright type (it has a funny turbo brush thingy) but has subsequently been spotted showing it off demonstrating it to his friends Grin

I second the idea of a Miele. You can get cheaper versions of the bags, which cuts down the cost.

Thank you, had seen good reviews of the miele pet vacuum, not heard of the air ram k9 but will look it up. Also seen a vax pet vacuum with good reviews; anyone got one? Keep the recommendations coming.

We've got the Miele cat and dog upright. Awesome on dog hair.

It's really powerful, though, so I seem to block it constantly sucking up things I shouldn't.

Another vote for the Miele cat and dog - our last cleaner insisted we swapped our dyson for one - and she was right

It's been going strong for 8 years of near-daily use

Yet another vote for the Miele Cat & Dog.

I've just bought a Shark Lift Away upright. I've got a Black Lab and a Golden Retriever who sheds all the time. The shark is brilliant on the carpets upstairs. We have wood floor downstairs. Would recommend it.

For the love of the gods, don't get a Vax Pet, they're fecking useless. I have friends who have them also and agree. After months of frustration we've just gone back to a Dyson. We got the new big ball cinetic animal model and it is AMAZING. And in fairness our vaccuums have to cope with a LOT as we have 4 hairy golden retrievers. It is a godsend.

Yep miele cat and dog. Amazing. I have the newer c3 one. Three different heads - normal one, hardwood floor one then the power turbo which is supposed to be the one for the animal hair. Even the normal one seems to do the job though!

I have a Miele upright and it is fantastic. Much much better than my previous Vax, and the Dyson.

I've just got a Bosch Athlet, as I was fed up as my dog sheds copiously.

It gets even more up than my Miele Cat and dog and has usurped it entirely Shock I love it and being cordless my vacuuming time has halved.

Another vote for the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal, we've also got four dogs. We replaced our Henry with it and the difference is amazing. So much easier to use and infinitely more effective.

I had a Miele cat and dog and loved it. Then replaced with a dyson 59 (the cordless one) which was better.

Now have a roomba 880 which leaves EVERYTHING in its dust... It picks up every single hair and even better it's a robot so no effort from me!
