She's 16, a cross breed and lovely, gentle girl.
She has a (probably) cancerous nasal tumour. We took her to the vets on Christmas Eve as the small bump on her nose grew fast over the period of about a week. She's been having seizures, her nose and mouth bleeds more so when she has/is eating. The vet said on a younger dog she would have recommended operating but the vet wouldn't have recommended it for a 16 year old with. I don't think we would have chosen an operation for her anyway, if she survived the recovery would be horrendous.
Ddog 1 cried and howled when we took Ddog 2 to the vets last week, our lovely elderly neighbour came in (she has a key for emergencies) and took Ddog 1 to her house until we got back.
DD1 (8) is devastated, DD2 (6) is taking it in her stride. DD2 has asked if she can come with us, DH is against it but I'm not too sure. She is young I know but I think she could cope with it. DD1 and Ddog 1 are going to the PILs.
I am in tears already I don't know how I am going to cope with losing her. We got her as an emaciated rescue, we nursed her back to health. She is a lovely, kind, sweet dog and is so good with the kids.

Aw Pink, so sorry to hear your DDog is so poorly. She is obviously a much loved member of your family.
You have done the right thing for her since she first came to you and you are bravely doing the right thing now. She will end her long, happy, life peacefully and avoiding prolonged pain and suffering.
You are bound to feel bereft but I hope in time you can draw comfort from how good a life she has obviously had with you.
Our dog was PTS at 15 and it happened really quickly, just a few seconds. I hope your girl has a similar transition. I went on my own & sat with him for a while afterwards.
It is awful losing a beloved dog. The vet has been to the house twice now to put dogs to sleep. It has been such a relief for them to come to us. The first dog to go was particularly special. . As so many people have said, having a dear dog pts is the final act of kindness.

my heart goes out to you - we can all empathise with the dreadful dog-shaped hole they leave.
agree it is better not to let your DC attend - they can say their goodbyes before your trip to the vet.
in tears now and just gave my beloved 12 yo lurcher a cuddle.
A really heartfelt well done for giving your lovely DDog a good death. It is more than many of us do and I hope that I can be as brave when my aged mutts have to leave me.
Also thank you for the sedation info. I will store this away until the time comes.

I'm feeling a bit bereft, there are not many times in my life that I have seen DH cry and today was one of those. I feel a bit guilty for feeling relieved about it all. The PILs did her proud and are getting her a commemorative stone to go on her grave 
Ddog 1 is not the same dog from earlier today, I just don't know how to help her.
I said earlier that there will be no more dogs for us after this, but the house doesn't feel right, for so long we've always had two dogs
Oh Plomino, I'm so sorry to hear that. It's just so difficult, no matter the age of our pet. Having to make the decision, it's so damn final and hard to do.

We had to have our grey PTS a few months ago,she had a stroke in the night & was paralysed down one side.The day before she had been lolloping over the fields.It was awful.I'm still not over it
