The doghouse

Today is the day that Ddog 2 is leaving us forever.

She's 16, a cross breed and lovely, gentle girl.

She has a (probably) cancerous nasal tumour. We took her to the vets on Christmas Eve as the small bump on her nose grew fast over the period of about a week. She's been having seizures, her nose and mouth bleeds more so when she has/is eating. The vet said on a younger dog she would have recommended operating but the vet wouldn't have recommended it for a 16 year old with. I don't think we would have chosen an operation for her anyway, if she survived the recovery would be horrendous.

Ddog 1 cried and howled when we took Ddog 2 to the vets last week, our lovely elderly neighbour came in (she has a key for emergencies) and took Ddog 1 to her house until we got back.
DD1 (8) is devastated, DD2 (6) is taking it in her stride. DD2 has asked if she can come with us, DH is against it but I'm not too sure. She is young I know but I think she could cope with it. DD1 and Ddog 1 are going to the PILs.

I am in tears already I don't know how I am going to cope with losing her. We got her as an emaciated rescue, we nursed her back to health. She is a lovely, kind, sweet dog and is so good with the kids.

I'm so sorry.

I would advise against taking any dc to the vet with you. I had to have my dog pts earlier this year and it was quite traumatic for me. Dd had wanted to come and I didn't let her. I'm glad she didn't come. It's not just a normal injection they have to get it in a vein. May well be different with an elderly dog but my dog fought like hell and it was quite distressing.

I hope it goes as well as it can do.

Thank you, that is good advice. Neither DH or I have ever personally been in this situation so not actually sure of the logistics.

We will send DD2 to the PILs as well.

The vet said she might sedate Ddog 2 first as usually she has to be muzzled at the vets as she is terrified and once bit one of the vets, not badly, but still we insist on the muzzle for both hers and the vets protection. The bump on her nose/snout its huge and uncomfortable so the vet suggested a light sedation first to help her be less scared and more comfortable.

We are burying her in PILs back garden, they are very close to both our dogs and won't be moving anymore. I've asked the DD's to help PILs get everything ready there.

I'm dreading this afternoon.

Aw Pink, so sorry to hear your DDog is so poorly. She is obviously a much loved member of your family.
You have done the right thing for her since she first came to you and you are bravely doing the right thing now. She will end her long, happy, life peacefully and avoiding prolonged pain and suffering.
You are bound to feel bereft but I hope in time you can draw comfort from how good a life she has obviously had with you.

Our dog was PTS at 15 and it happened really quickly, just a few seconds. I hope your girl has a similar transition. I went on my own & sat with him for a while afterwards.

Sorry to read you are going through this, my old boy developed a similar lump on his nose which also came really quickly owner a period of a few days. He was also old so vet didn't want to do anything with it, luckily it didn't bleed often only after violent sneezing followed by fainting/seizure which was more down to his heart disease.
He finally went to rainbow bridge at the beginning of November 7 weeks away from his 17th birthday. Had taken him for a check up but knew during the day he wouldn't be coming home with me.
I was devastated and a right mess at the vets but he looked tired and the end was really peaceful, the nurse who had looked after him for years held him and I stroked his head, it was really quick and I know it was the right thing as I couldn't bear to see him suffer anymore.
I hope things go well with your lovely girl today, it will be hard and they take a little bit of your heart with them, but at least we can let them go with dignity and before too much pain and suffering happens.. In tears now for your girl and my old boy xx

It is awful losing a beloved dog. The vet has been to the house twice now to put dogs to sleep. It has been such a relief for them to come to us. The first dog to go was particularly special. Flowers. As so many people have said, having a dear dog pts is the final act of kindness.

Oh love, I'm so sorry.

Dogs steal your heart and then break it. I'm going through the slow demise of my beloved old boy, and steeling myself for the inevitable.

Take care of yourself, and give the other dog a cuddle. You have made that dog's life so much better than it could have been, and giving it a peaceful dignified end is the best thing any of us could ever wish for xx

everyone has said what I would have said Flowers Flowers Sad
my heart goes out to you - we can all empathise with the dreadful dog-shaped hole they leave.
agree it is better not to let your DC attend - they can say their goodbyes before your trip to the vet.
in tears now and just gave my beloved 12 yo lurcher a cuddle.

It's been done and it was very peaceful. DH and I both feel a sense of relief, we didn't expect that.

The DD's went to the PILs with Ddog 1 and helped FIL to dig the grave for Ddog 2, they put a teddy and letters from them both in with her. Both girls had a good cry and are now happily eating ice cream in their pjs on the sofa.

Ddog 1 is a bit lost and off her food but we will keep a close eye on her.

Thank you all for your kind words and good advice.

I'm glad it was peaceful. I hadn't realised that sedation beforehand could be an option or I'd have asked for it. My dog had to be muzzled and hated the muzzle so was terrified. I still find it upsetting. I asked the vet to do it without the muzzle but dog was going crazy and kept going for the vet.

I'm so sorry. We lost all our pets in a few months and it is awful. It sounds like she was a very well loved dog and everyone is supporting each other.

My neighbour has the loveliest dog and I don't think they will make their next birthday. It's the price you pay for loving them. Just so sad.

Flowers A really heartfelt well done for giving your lovely DDog a good death. It is more than many of us do and I hope that I can be as brave when my aged mutts have to leave me.

Also thank you for the sedation info. I will store this away until the time comes.

Thank you all for the flowers and kind words.

I'm feeling a bit bereft, there are not many times in my life that I have seen DH cry and today was one of those. I feel a bit guilty for feeling relieved about it all. The PILs did her proud and are getting her a commemorative stone to go on her grave Smile

Ddog 1 is not the same dog from earlier today, I just don't know how to help her.

I said earlier that there will be no more dogs for us after this, but the house doesn't feel right, for so long we've always had two dogs Sad

I'm so sorry . We've had terrible news here today too . One of our beloved greyhounds was x rayed today . He has osteosarcoma, and he's only eight . He's come home today with painkillers , but I think he won't be with us by the end of the week . He will be the second hound our other dog has outlived , and I'm dreading it , not least because the last time this happened , she ended up terribly depressed . I have a feeling we will have to get another , although he's irreplaceable .

I've spent all day saying the platitudes , trying to soften the blow to a devastated DH , DD and DS . Then I went and sobbed in the bath .

I only hope I can be as brave as you, and that my boy can go as peacefully as your girl xx

Oh Plomino, I'm so sorry to hear that. It's just so difficult, no matter the age of our pet. Having to make the decision, it's so damn final and hard to do.

I wish you and your family all the best Flowers
