The doghouse

ddog has hair stuck in her eye

Ddog came into the living room about ten minutes ago with her left eye closed. Have had as good of a look as I can and she seems to have one of my hairs stuck in it :( she can open her eye but obviously is choosing not to die to pain/discomfort. Any tips on what to do? All vets are shut now so will be extortionate if we need to take her in but will obviously pay if she needs to go. Can't really think of any ways to get it out for her

If you can sort of close the eye for her and push the lids together, sometimes that will encourage tear production.

Try a dampened corner of tissue paper - so fold it up into a triangle so no fibres escape and try this.

It will probably just work its way out tbh, definately not worth £££ at out of hours vets unless you think the eye is scratched but i sincerely doubt it.

Can you just remove the hair with a corner of damp tissue like you would with an eyelash in a child's eye

You can make up some boiled cooled water or mild saline and with tissue, gauze or similar flush her eye (get it really soggy and squeeze it over her eye) and then wipe, let her blink and get a new bit and do it again. No need to hold her eye open it should be enough to get things moving. You'll probably find her eye is coating it with goo into a nice eye bogey so hopefully it will shift enough for you to remove it.
It will be better to leave her with a closed eye than to get in there with cotton buds or anything if you can't get it out and go to the vet in the morning where she can be numbed and checked out.
Poor pup, tell her my DD sends commiserations - except my hair had been swallowed and had wrapped around her uvula, felt guilty for ages!

Oh no Bernard your poor dd! Is she ok? Her eye is kind of glazing over slightly with eye bogey will try the clean gauze n saline and see how we go. Other than it being closed generally she doesn't seem in any visual distress hoping we can get it out tonight as tomorrow's vet cost will still be huge as its Sunday :(

Thankfully she was absolutely fine! She was tiny and doesn't even remember it - I still get a pang when I think of it.
How's Ddog's eye today?

My dog often gets grass in her eyes. Usually happens after she's rolled in cut grass in the park - she loves newly cut grass and will roll all over a recently mown park.

I used to get really panicky about it, although it never seems to bother her, but it always eventually works its way out; realise hair is finer so might be more difficult.

How's her eye today Angry?

The hair seems to have come out over night the white of her eye is really red, presumably from irritation?, it's fully open now and she doesn't seem to be too upset about it. Will see how she is in the morning and if it's still red will get her a vet appointment. Thank you all for the advice :)
