Absolutely heartbroken

My little Pug, who is only 4, died suddenly on Sunday evening. We were chasing him around the room, playing, when he just collapsed and keeled over. He was dead within a minute. I just can't stop thinking about how it happened, and why, when he was so young. My little 2 year old witnessed the whole thing, and keeps asking why he's sick and where he's gone. My husband and I can't stop crying, and my 12 year old is completely devastated too. I just can't get my head around it, and the house feels so empty and cold without him Sad.

Oh god how awful. so very sorry :(

it was nothing you did there was probably an undetected underlying condition that caused it.

what a nasty shock for you all Flowers

I'm so sorry.
Did you take him to the vet for a post mortem?

Oh Wine. I am so terribly, terribly sorry. You poor things.

Going through similar at the moment (6 year old Lab with cancer - not long left). So I understand that awful, gut-wrenching, hollow feeling you have.

So sad - I agree with giles he must've had an underlying condition but a horrible shock for you all Flowers.

sadly- pugs are prone to a lot of health conditions - which would probably explain his sudden death
not that that is much comfort and sorry for your loss. Flowers
Unless there is a reason for it which might help other pug owners I personally would not have a PM - your sadness and loss is hard enough to bear without adding to it.

we took him to the vets, and they are arranging for him to be cremated. we didn't want to put him through a post mortem, as stupid as that sounds, we wanted him to remain intact. the vet said it sounds like a heart attack, but they can't be sure. my husband is blaming himself as he's the one that was chasing him getting him all excited Sad. I just can't stop thinking about it, and I miss him so much.

Oh he can't blame himself. if it was due to an underlying condition it could have happened any time. he was playing and loving his dog. it was unfortunate but it was no one's fault. please dont blame yourself wine-dhhe died happy and playing with his family who loved him there are worse ways to go x

I'm so so sorry. Truly awful.

You gave him a lovely life, though, he was with the people he loved, he didn't suffer long, and now he will be in the a Happy Hunting Grounds ( or so you can tell you 2 year old) where he will be getting the rewards all good dogs get, finally catching that squirrel.

I'm. So sorry.

Oh gosh I'm so sorry, what an awful shock for you all Sad

All I can do is reiterate other posters and say that his last moments were with his family, having fun and feeling loved, not that I imagine that's much comfort right now.

I'm so sorry. Please don't blame yourselves. It really wasn't anything to do with you. Try and focus on the fact that your little dog was with a family he loved, playing and having fun when he died. He didn't get a drawn out illness, he didn't suffer.. While his life may have been short, it was good, and that is down to you and your family..

Honestly OP he had a lovely, lovely life and he was being loved and played with when he went. Please give your DH a massive un-mumsnetty hug from me and tell him it was NOT HIS FAULT.

How are you all today? How are the DCs?

Heartbreaking.
As others have said, he had a marvellous, fun, loved life and died swiftly, having fun with his people.
It's not uncommon in flatfaced breeds. Not DH's fault.

Gosh I'm so sorry, what a horrible shock. Just want to reiterate that the poor little dog obviously had an underlying health condition that you couldn't possibly have known anything about and it is not your poor dh's fault. Everybody plays mad games with their dogs, it's part of the fun. I'm so sorry for your poor dc too, it's devastating to lose your dog and even more so when you have no warning.

I'm sure he's happy up there chasing his squirrels. Flowers

Thank you everyone, last night was tough my 12 year old cried himself to sleep, and the 2 year old keeps asking for her doggy Sad. My husband and I are struggling to hold it together, and keep reliving how it happened. The house just feels soulless without him Sad. My cat is pining for him too, they used to snuggle up on the settee every night, and he keeps going room to room meowing.

I'm so sorry. Just been through losing a dog myself. It is heartbreaking. Flowers

Very sadly, it is extremely likely that the underlying health condition that caused this tragic sudden death is not at all mysterious or unknown, but the result of breeding for a severely flattened face with consequent narrowed airways and predisposition to asphyxiation.

Oh gosh, you poor things :( :( So very sad for you.

It does very much sound like it was the dogs heart that gave out. Please tell your DH not to blame himself, this was just waiting to happen. My bet that he either had a leaky valve or an enlarged heart and both of these can lead to sudden death.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, you could have done to prevent it and nothing you would have done would have caused it.

Flowers You must be devestated.

Aw Wine very Sad but your dog's last memory was playing chase-play with your DH.
Sounds like a happy last memory for him, yes?
