Puppy food advice

Hello all.

We have a lovely little border terrier pup. He was ten weeks on Sunday and is doing really well.

The only area of concern we have is what to feed him.

The breeder had him on iams puppy which we know isn't great but we got some to ease his transition planning to change in the near future.

Last week he had a bout of diarrhoea so we took him to the vet who said he seemed fine, no temp, up to date with worming etc She advised to feed him chicken and rice until he feels better. He was fine in less than twelve hours ( of course after we paid all the vets fees haha) but he now doesn't like the iams and when we give it to him his stools become runnier again.

What food would you recommend? I have tried googling but I'm so confused with all the varying advice.

We switched to Canagan from IAMs which our dog enjoys, We get a runny poo every few days but the she eats god knows what on walks!

My 10 week old Golden Retriever pup is on Royal Canin Maxi Junior at the moment, simply because this was what the breeder started her on. The website that fruit mentioned really is worth a look. Once we start getting to the end of this sack of food I intend to gradually switch her over to Millies Wolfheart which has good reviews.

Please - don't feed any bagged dry food - BT's are notoriously sensitive eaters.
Our BT who is now 5 has had a nightmare with allergies and skin issues she was always very picky about her food and would randomly go off stuff or be just generally disinterested or get tummy problems.

We very reluctantly went onto raw food (we use natural instinct) and she was transformed. I thought it would be a mess and smelly etc etc but comes in frozen cartons which I defrost and feed to her as needed. I don't warm it or anything and she goes mad for all of them! Happy to give you more info but honestly the crap that goes into the dry food is really poor has loads of grains in which are utterly unnecessary and is overly processed.
PS Im not a knitted knickers kind of person but i was at the end of my tether and happy to give anything a try and I was amazed. it only took a couple of days to transition her and I get it delivered direct from website

Agree with everything kingfisher says. My dog also had terrible diarrhoea when I got him. I put him on Natural Instinct and it cleared up. He was then on dry food for a while (Millie's Wolfheart and then Markus Muhle) but he and my other dog have been back on Natural Instinct for ages now and they love it.
I order 80kg a time to get 30% discount and I go to the warehouse to collect it so no delivery charge to pay.

We used to feed our frenchie arden grange but recently swapped over to pure pet food- a relatively small company - they make dehydrated dog food so similar to raw and we can't believe the difference...overall he looks better, shiny coat etc but much less poop, less smelly easier to clean, and now the frenchie barely farts! Plus they do free home delivery in 1-2 days!

Hello Frenchie - congratulations on your dpup!

The thing about dpups is that they do get lots of upset tums for loads of reasons and normally are absolutely fine, will have no temp, not be ill, and just right themselves.

Also, about dryfoods; I have read endless threads on the subject you could choose any/many that might or might not suit your particular dpup, but whatever you choose i would definitely stick with the boiled chicken and rice whilst introducing each one gradually and until you get the one, just go back to the C&r

For many people it seems that the dry foods do work but there are a helluva lot of people working their way through all the brands to find it!

Hope you can find one soon, or try wet food.. like Chappie, and some of your own food and check out raw food too.
