Put in an application for rescue dog today

The rescue was really busy but everyone was looking at the puppies, no-one in the older dog section so I'm hoping no-one else will apply for him.

We fell in love with a 2-3 year old lab cross. He's only been there a week so still needs to be neutered and temp tested. I went and said hello to him first then took the dc in one at a time. Dog (he doesn't have a name yet) was lovely, very friendly, a bit boisterous, clearly very food orientated going by how many treats were coming out of the handlers pocket, he was great with the kids from the little interaction we had with him. He seemed to take a liking to 4 1/2 ds2, sitting next to him (practically on his feet), kept looking up at him and nuzzling into his hand.

I'm pretty sure we can give him a lovely home. We have a fully fenced secure garden, I'm a SAHM, the boys are 6 & 4 and home schooled and we spend a lot of time on the beach or in parks/reserves, on bush walks. We don't really go anywhere often that a dog couldn't come with.

I've been watching kikopup videos on YouTube and looking at crate training.

Is there anything else you could advise? I'm very much hoping we'll be accepted for him so I want to be prepared but even if we turned down we'll keep looking for the right dog so want to be prepared anyway.

Keepin my fingers crossed now.

Oh good luck - I hope you get him! I've always had rescued dogs, and you just KNOW when you've met the right dog.
Was it a national rescue place or a local one? Some have 'rules' about kids under five or seven. Saying that, a lab cross should be good with kids.
Keep us informed!

Fantastic. I wish more people would move past the puppies and consider some of the mature doggies. I have adopted 3 rescues over the past 11 years and all were over 6 years old.

Wishing you loads of luck and love with your new best friend. Can't wait to hear how it all goes.

Good luck Flowers

He sound lovely and you sound smitten.

Definitely go for it. I hope they accept you. I was also thinking about the rules re DC's ages. Seems an awful shame for the rules to be so rigid with so many older dogs in rescues not finding homes. All families are different and it's true some dogs and some children just aren't a suitable match, but sounds like ds2 and dog are made for each other.

Hope you get him. Keep us updated.

Hi, thank you everyone. It's our local council owned rescue centre. I don't know how much the rules vary to the UK but we're in NZ where they don't seem to automatically ban rehoming to families with young children.

They do temperament testing on each dog as it comes in and decide on what kind of home it will be best suited too. They haven't had the lab long so hasn't been temp tested yet but his handler mentioned how well dog behaved around the dc, he's in pretty good shape so obviously someone has taken care of him at some point but he knows very few commands.

We probably won't hear anything for a little while, I'm going to start buying a few small bits and pieces to put away anyway and will update if I get any news.

How exciting Midnight!

We adopted our girl in December 2011. We already had a boy (Lab - 2 years old) and had decided not to get another dog as he was really happy, very people orientated, and had a very full life (agility and obedience classes, dog day care once a week and lots of good walks!). Then I came across this little girl in rescue. She'd been found as a stray but had clearly been used as a breeding bitch. She was in a right state - terrified of people, not toilet trainer - probably never lived in a house.

It was 100% the best thing we ever did. It was hard work but she's amazing now! So full of life. I think rescues always have something about them - that little bit of gratitude.

So far as prep goes - I'd start researching local trainers. Go and visit (I always say a good trainer will let you visit without a dog). Look for somebody doing positive, reward based training / clicker training. Sounds like this boy is very food moticvated so should be easy to train!

Assuming you get approved by the rescue - get him a blanket, sleep with it for a few days, then take it in to rescue. We did this with our girl and it's still her favourite bed!

Invest some time in teaching your children about dog behaviour. Make sure they know the "fear" signals a dog gives off (freeze, growl, snap, bite), so they know when to back off. Teach them how to handle a dog.

And finally, read "The Culture Clash", by Jean Donaldson.

Good luck!

Thank you for that post cupcakes

We didn't get him unfortunately. :(

We went to see him again on Saturday and bumped into another family who had applied for him. I knew as soon as I saw the family that we wouldn't get the dog. They only had one child who was older (11/12). We have 2 who are 4 & 6.

Just had a phone call from the rescue confirming my thoughts.

Guess we just keep visiting and keeping fingers crossed.

Is it normal for rescues to only do homechecks AFTER deciding on someone?

I assumed they would do homechecks on all applicants (they take up to 3 per dog) before deciding. They haven't homechecked us at all so basically they have decided based on a few answers on a small questionnaire.

We have a lab cross from the dogs trust. We put our name down for her and were provisionally accepted based on a questionnaire and only then was the home check booked. Once that was done (and we proved the daft changes they insisted on) we could pick her up.

Sorry you missed out on him, must mean the perfect dog is still waiting for you somewhere though Smile

What a shame MD - hard for your children I would imagine Sad. Hopefully the right dog will come along.

Good that the rescue is so thorough I suppose.

Sorry you missed out OP, how disappointing. The right dog will find you - they have a way of doing that.

I would say very few rescues have the resources to carry out home checks until they're pretty sure a family are right for the dog.

Yes, you're right. The right dog is out there somewhere, I've just got to keep looking.

I'll hang out here for a while and keep reading while searching.

Thank you :)

Well, bit of an update Smile

Ds1 and I went back up to the rescue today to have a look at other dogs, noticed the black lab (now called Scout) still there. Just assumed he hadn't been picked up yet and we carried on looking.

One of the handlers came after us to tell us that the other family weren't taking Scout now and did we still want him?

Of course I said yes, they said they were still a bit unsure about Scout around younger children but they want us all to go back in on Saturday so they can observe him and the kids and if all goes well, they'll do our house check early next week.

Can't stop smiling. :)

Think we'll stick with Scout as his name. He hasn't had it long and it suits him.

Will try to get some photos next time we go.
