What do wish you'd know before you embarked on having a puppy?

Our new black lab puppy has been born.

So we have a few weeks to get our homes and minds organised.

Neither of us have owned a dog before but we have read LOTS and have dog sat the matriarch of the line of pups.

I'm wondering about some of the organisational challenges (we have 3 school age dc), insurance advice, food and treat recommendations, as well as any top tip puppy training advice.

The first few weeks will make you think "Oh god, what have I done!?!" but then suddenly it will all get easier (for us this was around 14-16 weeks).

Read as much as you can and listen to all kinds of training methods. For example, we thought yelping when Dpup nipped would help but sometimes it actually made it worse. Silently withdrawing and ignoring is the only thing that worked for us. But it varies so get lots of perspectives.

Make sure everyone knows the appropriate cue words, what they are and when to use them so the pup doesn't get confused.

Take tonnes of pictures! He'll look so different at 8 weeks, 10 weeks and 12 weeks and before you know it he'll be a lolloping sixth month old!

That it's ok to have days when you wonder why on earth you ever wanted a puppy.

That you can love a dog almost as much as your own children.
