Abput a week ago my staffordshire bull terrier hurt her leg at home (foot slipped down the back of the sofa between cushions) she helped at the time limped for a couple of steps then seemed ok. Since then when she wakes up she limps for s couple of minutes then walks fine. After a slightly longer walk today she cane home had a nap then yelped as she tried to stand up limped again for a few steps then was fine. Rang the vet who suggested taking her down. Got there explained the full story as above and vet instantly grabbed the part we had explained seemed to be hurting, between her paw and the first 'ankle' joint, dog growled and tried to back away. Vet then placed a muzzle on her (no problem) and asked DH to hold her still and proceeded to try and feel her leg lots of struggling by dog resulting in both her me and DH being quite distressed. Vet nurse then suggested lifting dog off of the floor so she would have no leverage whilst vet continued exam. Vet then quite forcibly yanked at dogs leg pulling it and pushing it in all different positions and apply quite a lot of pressure to the area we had earlier suggested seemed to be where the pain came from. Vet then said she thinks it's muscular prescribed some anti inflammatory liquid and sent us on our way. Have been home two hours and dog now will not weight bear atall and is constantly crying. She's in more pain now than before we took her! What if anything can we do to ease her pain and should I take her back to the vet that seems to have worsened it for her? Sorry for the essay!!!!

It's completely heart breaking looking at her now when she was feeling a lot better before we took her :(

Oh poor thing Sad

Not a vet just an animal lover but does sound to me like she pushed to hard and perhaps the suggestion of a return trip and a mild sedative may have been better.

I'd give the injection a chance go work and hope she gets some rest over night and if she's no better take her to another vet. But explain situation first and that she may require sedation.

A vet dislocated my dog's knee once! She limped for ages afterwards. We always specifically ask for other vets in the practice when we take her now!

Annoying thing is she is sedated for all over treatments because of her refusal to co-operate, ex rescue dog, just feel like I shouldn't have taken her now :(

It's not your fault you did the right thing in taking your poor dog.

The vet sounds like she just didn't have the patience or gentle manner needed to deal with your beloved dog.

Lovelydiscusfish this is what concerns me of they have aggravated it and possibly caused a new injury it's my poor staff that suffers along with MY bank account not the vet she still gets paid and doesn't have to live with s poorly uncomfortable dog :(

Kormachameleon I understand some pressure would need applying but she was really pulling and the dog was really howling in my opinion a lot more than was needed

How is your poor doggie now, stillinshock? It's so stressful, isn't it? Hope she's doing ok. Do you have the option of using another vet in the practice?

She spent the whole night crying and limping :( and was very hot to the touch x seems to be a bit brighter today although eyes are still blood shot from getting herself so stressed last night x spoke to a different vet at the practice who agreed he felt the physical restraint and limb manipulation was unnecessary has said he feels that her behaviour last night was probably more to do with the trauma of being lifted in the air, muzzled, restrained etc and to keep a close eye on her today lots of fuss and love to reassure her and see how she goes x

Hi lots of rest no running about for a few days. See if it improves. If not or appears to bevgetting worse. Back to vet. Its sometes very difficult to find the exact spot. So some manipulation is required. But rest will help.

Thank you x yes she is strictly on rest for remainder of the week the part that's causing her pain is inbetween her paw and her 'ankle' joint. The actual 'ankle' moves without causing her pain but the leg area is tender to touch which we were aware of before the appointment x she's got anti inflammatorys for rest of the week so hopefully will feel much better soon x
