The doghouse

What was this thing stuck on the dog?

Earlier, I thought the dog had a tick. But it wasn't a tick - and now I'm wondering what it was and I'm hoping you can help me figure it out.

It was embedded into her skin on her back around where her collar would be.

It was a little smaller than a grain of rice. On the outside, it was flaky and white.
As I pulled it off with the tick removal tool, the thing broke and it looked like there was a blood vessel running through it (i could see the red line through it)

The dog seemed (and still seems) completely unaffected by this, although removing the thing from her skin did make her bleed a tiny bit.

She has been wormed within the last 4-5 months and she has been treated with Advantage within the last 4 weeks.

Thanks :)

I guess it could be. I've seen quite a few ticks in my life, but not a dead one attached to the skin.

I couldn't see legs or similar on the white thing. I also checked the area for anything that could still be embedded in the dog's skin, but it didn't look like it.

My old girl used to get a type of warty growth that sounds very similar to what you're describing. They looked like a flaky bump on top and when pulled out/off would bleed a little.

We asked the vet about them several times and they just said they were nothing to worry about, but never explained what they were. She had them all her life, but they never affected her - she didn't seem to even notice they were there, so not painful or itchy and lived to 14 years, so the vets were clearly right.

Thanks for your replies.

I didn't think it would be a skin tag or warty growth as it came off very easily - but my DH seems to think it could be a skin tag as well.

We do have an appointment with the vet later today regarding something else and I'll ask what they think it is.

Thanks again - I really appreciate it!
