Training Tips

I figured it might be nice to have a thread where folks can drop in and chat about training techniques, as well as asking those smaller questions about training which don't seem to warrant a fill thread.

For example - BluePup's 16 months old now; he's a medium-sized rescue mongrel and I got him exactly one year ago today. He's fairly bright and has picked up a lot of the things I've taught him, and seems really willing to obey. There's just one thing I've not managed - retrieving. It's not the end of the world, but it's the case of many a lost ball! He's more than happy to chase a toy if I throw it, and then to march proudly around the field with it in his mouth then lie down somewhere and chew on it. However if I call him back to me he'll drop the toy and come running back without it. Any recommendations?

Teach your dog to hold and give toys at close range. Use a toy, get them interested and when they take it reward them. Have good treats close to hand and when they release the toy reward that too. There are probably guides on you tube which show it better than I can describe on here.
