Neutered Dog and errr...

...well ScaryDog was neutered a couple of year ago (is now 2.5 years old) and he has started getting erections. When he does he just sits there and whimpers pitifully and won't move (not even for food or the jangle of his lead). I mentioned it to the vet but she just shrugged and suggested a nearby female might be in season triggering is. There are definitely no female dogs living within 100m radius, so I don't think so.

Anyway my questions are is it normal that a neutered dog can get an erection. Is it normal that dog won't move when he has one? Why is it happening? Or is ScaryDog just odd????

I hope it's normal as my 7yr old neutered dog still does this and he still tries to hump

Neutered dogs are capable of performing the full sexual act, most won't get the urge in the first place and those that do won't impregnate a bitch, but some are still willing and able to give it a shot.

At least your dog can sit, mine can't because it gets in the way

100m is nothing the smell of an on heat bitch can travel up to 8 miles. Though often dogs get erections with non-sexual excitement too.

I nearly had my neutered boy to the vet thinking he'd done himself an injury or had some sort of disease of the willy or something. Me and dh got ourselves all worked up about it but someone on a doggie forum said it's 'bulbus glandis' (don't Google pics), and sure enough by the time I looked again it had gone down.

My neutered male gets his lipstick out sometimes when DH gets home from work so through non-sexual excitement. He doesn't seem to notice though.

Grin at 'lipstick' and stealth boasting of big willy! Thanks to you all, as I now feel reassured ScaryDog is not too weird!!

OMG at the 'bulbus glandis' pics - you know I had to google! ewwww!

Actually I remember now I came home one last year to what I can only describe as a 'string of goo' across his fave toy and my brand new stair carpet. I tried not to acknowledge what it probably was....Only the builder and the dog had been in during that time - on balance I prefer to think it was the dog!! Yuk!!

I was really shocked the first time my lab had a proper erection, was completely unprepared for the goo stuff, and how long it went on for. I kept thinking he was finished - trying to mop up then he'd move, stand in it spreading it about, and there'd be more coming out.
After that first time we made him go outside and he'd stand by the patio doors trying to make eye contact and looking really miserable until everything subsided. It didn't seem to give him any pleasure at all.
