The doghouse

What is it with these well-meaning but oblivious people?

Just had a lovely man round for some work on the house. He was telling me about his five month old terrier puppy. Apparently it's the apple of his eye, it's the child he and his wife can't have, etc. Takes it training every week although the course comes to an end tonight. Absolutely adored. The only fly in the ointment is that pup can't seem to learn to do her business outside.

Then he happened to mention that he and his wife work all day every day. They leave the house at eight, she goes home for lunch for an hour at twelve, and then the puppy is left till six o'clock. Every weekday. Shock

I mean, where do you start?

I tried to explain that perhaps they weren't suited to having a dog. They've never had one before. They had a cat. Apparently they absolutely couldn't possibly part with this dog now. I said you can't really leave a little baby dog at home on it's own all day every day, it's a bit cruel, isn't it?

He hadn't really thought about it. Hmm

I tried to suggest a dog walker or sitter, as they have no family nearby. He said please not to report him to the RSPCA! as if I'd bother with that shower

He said he feels a bit bad now. I said talk to his trainer. Or a vet might be able to recommend a sitter/walker. No wonder it doesn't know that it's supposed to pee outside, there's never anyone there to let it out!

What else could I have done? Can't stop thinking about this lonely little puppy. Sad

........and that is why we can't get a puppy until dh retires in a few years, even tho he only works pt now there are some days he is out for 4.5 hours, and I work ft.
If there was a dog license scheme where you had to at least answer some basic questions, like can you afford food, vet bills etc.
Will someone be at home.
Where are local puppy training classes?
