That really
DH went to visit his friend a few hours away they only see each other twice a year.
When DH got there his friend had 3 dogs locked outside in the pouring rain with no shelter. DH asked why they were there and the friend said they were his he bought them as puppies from a family who were struggling he got them for his gf but then he dumped her and she said she didn't want them anyway and left the friend with them.
DH asked could he bring the dogs in and friend complained but did it in the end.

DH couldn't see any dog things in the house and the dogs were rather thin .Turned out the dogs sleep outside in all weathers and food is just chucked for them when the friend feel likes it.

One of them banged the door with its nose and friend screamed at them to shut up grabbed a picture frame and chucked it at them. The friend didn't seem to care and told DH to mind his own business.

DH went to check them out and they were very timid at first but they got used to him and were very sweet. DH asked could he take one and keep it and then they could try and find a rescue centre for the other two.

Friend said if DH wanted them he could have them all and if DH didn't take them he would just leave them in a river.
DH call his friend a prick and has brought all three back with him.

They are lovely dogs 2 are 10 month old Labrador cross and the other is a 12 month old Labrador. They are very sweet but it does look like they have been beaten by friend.

DH has gone to get some dog supplies to get them through the night with us. I was hoping you could tell me what to get and tell me what to do next.

Thank you

Labradors are, by nature, very loving dogs. Given them time to get used to you, sit quietly with them, and give them gentle fuss and attention when they come close to you.

Take them outside after you feed them, so they can do their business.

Are you thinking you might keep them? If not, I would recommend either a breed rescue, or the Dogs' Trust - tbh, I would recommend the Dogs' trust first, as they are very good at re homing dogs, and labs will be very popular with people looking for a rescue dog.

Your dh has done the right thing, and you are both heroes for looking after these poor dogs. There former owner, on the other hand.....

Awww I luffs your dh. Realistically though can you keep them? They will need vet care etc. Im sure you know all this. Your first port of call should be lab rescue they could help with rehoming , fostering and nuetering. Good luck x

What a lovely man! (Although his choice of friends appears a bit suspect Wink)
For tonight I would buy some very bland food, labelled sensitive (or even just give them some cooked chicken with rice) and not give them too much at once. Their digestion will be all over the place, they probably have worms and a sudden overload, especially of something rich, will make them react badly. Some old towels or similar will make serviceable beds for now. Tomorrow they need to be seen by a vet ideally, for a check, worming etc. They can see if the dogs are microchipped too
As for next steps, it depends what your longer term aim is. Are you intending to keep one or all. 3 adolescent labs is an ENORMOUS ask! especially with such a poor start, no training probably etc and most likely behavioural issues due to the cruelty to work through. Unless you are massively experienced and have the time to devote hours and hours to the cause then rehoming two at least in most sensible.
A breed specific rescue would be a great first step. Also consider whether you want to inform the dog warden and report the miserable piece of scum who did this

We don't know if we will keep them we were looking to get one dog first then another little later. However 3 would cost more and be a pretty big time commitment.
They are lovely, we have them in the living room with a baby gate in the doorway to create space between them and the DCs. But the dogs seem really gental and we have promised the eldest two DCs that once the younger ones are in bed if the dogs seem okay then they can meet each other. (I am thinking one dog at a time)

They do seem to be house trained but before they went to live with the friend the family who had them sees to have put time into them. The oldest dog can sit as well. The friend has only had them since Christmas So that's something.

Your DH is a beauty. And so are you for joining him in doing the right thing. You don't need internet strangers like me and other MNers to tell you this, but credit where credit's due and all that. He was very brave to suggest taking them away.

The advice so far sounds very sensible, especially the chicken or sensitive food suggestion.

I just wanted to express my support and admiration for both of you. For the time that those dogs are with you, they will know more love and affection than the whole of the time that the horrible man had them. Have a great weekend, although perhaps more expensive than you might have planned, and have some lovely cuddles with those lovely doggies.

Thanks Cake for you and DH and Biscuit Biscuit Biscuit for the dogs.

Both me and DH love dogs our Staffie died a year ago and we had waited until now to get another dog because we wanted our youngest DC to be a bit older first.
I am very proud of my DH for taking the dogs away and bring them.here.

So glad these poor dogs have a warm bed and food tonight. More than that I hope you can be their stepping stone to a better life how people can treat animals like that and sleep at night is absolutely beyond me.

What a brilliant man your DH is.

What area set you in? Could you google dog rescues, not council run ones.

Oh, bless your DH - good for him!! Thanks

First port of call will be to get them all scanned for microchips, just in case someone out there is looking for them. Dogs Trust are fab and there are breed-specific rescues out there who will be able to advise you. If they stay with you for the time being, you may find that behavioural niggles will emerge after a few days/weeks when they find their feet and start to relax and show their true colours, but then again you might not! You might be able to find a rescue that will give you backup and behavioural advice and help to find them a home but let you foster them in the meantime. I have some contacts in rescue and could get them to ask around if you want to give your rough whereabouts.

If you were thinking of possibly getting 2 dogs anyway... I don't see that 3 is any more of a time commitment than 2? Just sayin'! Well done for helping them out, bet they are glad to be inside!

Report the friend to the RSPCA/ police. He can be prosecuted for animal cruelty. If the dogs have any injuries that might have been caused by beating, take pics tonight.

Take the dogs to a vet explain the story as well. Sometimes with a murky background like that they may turn out to be stolen and they might have been microchipped as puppies.

Well done for showing the care and compassion and not walking away x

We are taking the dogs to the vets this afternoon to check them over. We shall then contact the police about friend.
The dogs are still lovely and they were really gentle with my eldest two DCs last night.

We made them makeshift leads and took them out this morning the older dog walks well but the younger two were much harder to walk.

Well done to your DH! Glad you are reporting the "friend".
You have had lots of good advice 're dogs trust and 're homing, if you do decide to keep 1 or more, you'll need to find a good trainer and get some strong walking boots! Labs love to walk!

6tantrumsaday · 15/02/2014 19:27

The dogs are underweight and they aren't microchipped.
We have brought them all back home with us for now and me and DH are going to work out what we shall do with.

Jolly well done both of you and as far as the "friend" goes, tell your DH to LTB! or steer him to some professional mental help if necessary (seriously, who buys their girlfriend who doesn't want a dog three dogs then keeps but abuses them when the relationship ends? Either a nasty bastard or somebody with serious problems that need addressed)

Would like to here back what happens if you do report said "friend".

Bet those dogs think they have hit the jack pot, best wishes to you all x

What a wonderful DH you have! Well done to him and all of you for rescuing the dogs!

Now the serious bit: please don't think I am raining on your parade but you need to be very realistic or you will go through a really rough and sad time later on. Getting a puppy can be a great idea. Getting a rescue pup with an uncertain past is a wonderful thing as long as the owner realises the extra work that will be needed. Training classes and socialisation asap are needed and you must set aside a lot of time to work with the dog who will almost certainly have some problems.

Now the awful bit: taking on two rescue pups with an uncertain past is a huge challenge that should only be undertaken by someone who has a lot of experience of dogs and can devote the majority of their time to the dogs. The puppies would need to be socialised and trained separately (walking alone would involve 4 walks a day) and it is a huge commitment. Taking on 3 rescue pups is foolhardy.

I know your heart says keep them all and I can see why - who could resist them?! But for your sake and for their sake you have to chose one and rehome the others as soon as possible so that they can have a chance to adjust to their new families.

Best of luck
