The doghouse

Thread to share dog friendly venues, pubs and cafes etc

As it's starting to get colder and I thought it might be a good idea for us to share info about places like cafes and pubs etc that welcome dogs indoors.

Nothing nicer than going for a lovely crisp dog walk and topping it off with either a pint or mug of hot chocolate.

I've looked at lots of the dog friendly listings, but they seem to be really out of date when I look at pubs etc in my area, as I know for a fact the listed pubs are anything but dog friendly, many of them having been taken over and gentrified/gastro-pubbed since the listings were made.

I am West Midlands based and will admit to not knowing any myself, so have totally selfish reasons for starting the thread! Blush Grin

So, if you know of anywhere particularly welcoming to dogs that you are willing to share ....

Oooh, great idea - it's hard to know the dog-friendly places unless you actually know them!

Not hugely helpful for you, as it's a little way from you, but for any Southern MNers; there's a lovely pub just outside of Sonning (Berks) called the Flowing Spring. They're dog friendly (as long as your dog can get up the stairs) and do good food.

The Dog and doublet (out by Bodymoor Heath) is dog friendly apparently

Right - I actually have one myself now.

Just been for lunch at Hatton Locks Cafe expecting to have to sit outside, but was pleasantly surprised to find they welcome dogs inside.

We've just had a lovely home-made casserole, followed by a huge slice of cake in the company of our puppy and various combinations of other dogs, all of whom were medium to large sized. Smile

The Coach at Beedon also in Berkshire is brilliantly dog-friendly. Serves fabulous food too!

I've found that, as a rule, village pubs are a lot more dog-friendly than town ones. Unless they've been over-gentrified, they're normally not bothered by well-behaved dogs, especially in bar areas.

Having said which, the time we had most problems was when we went to Cornwall. We went into a number of pubs where 'the dogs can go in the bar and the children can go in the family room' and never the twain shall meet!

We also went to The Jolly Sailor at Ashlett Creek at the weekend which was also fab for dogs. Plenty of space for them to run around on the green and in the quay before settling down indoors! We even saw a couple order sausages and chips for their (already fat) dog and proceed to cut it up into bite-size portions for him. Hmm

I agree with the village vs town pub thing - perhaps excluding some of the chainy gastro-pubs, which seem to have taken over all our local pubs over the past few years. Hmm

Thank you for all your suggestions so far.

Keep em coming folks! Grin

Gecko cafe in Glastonbury. I asked a bit apologetically if there was anywhere apart from a table on the pavement where we could sit with dog, expecting to be directed to garden... 'Anywhere you like' was the answer. Was most surprised. Food was lovely too!

Not much help to you I know, sorry Grin

All suggestions welcome Ormirian, you never know where you might end up visiting in the future and need a dog friendly place to eat. Smile

Not a specific recommendation, but I was pleasantly surprised when we had a holiday on the Norfolk broads that all the pubs we wanted to go to were dog-friendly (including one quite posh one) - ditto teashops. I guess that they realised that there would be a lot of people on hired boats who wouldn't want to leave their pet aboard.

That's worth knowing for people looking for dog friendly holiday locations Errol. Thank you. Smile

Boating definitely is a dog-friendly holiday, lots of the hire boats allow one Smile.

I started looking at similar websites for this kind of thing seeing as we will have Bob from Saturday onwards and it's getting cold

The dogfriendly website is ridiculously out of date so hopefully we can fill this thread up. I'm in Lancashire btw so will update as I find places Smile

I've been using a website called doggie pubs which is pretty good and can search by postcode. We're in west London and there are tons of places which welcome dogs if you ask. My favourite has to be the princess Victoria in shepherd's bush, amazing food and always a pork scratching for the pup!

Barter books in Alnwick. It has a café and roaring fire.
I believe heighley gate garden centre cafés allow dogs too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think we definitely need as many as we can get with the weather changing today - not to mention the weather they're predicting for the weekend.

Pizdets, I tried that site but most of the pubs in our area have listings that are years old and sadly the pubs have long since been taken over and gentrified/gastro-pubbed.

Oo, now that's one I can go to! Flowers

I would never have pegged them for being dog-friendly. Do they allow dogs in the whole place - or just the bar?

The whole place I think. I don't actually have a dog but was looking for somewhere to take the kids that wasn't a chain. I spoke to the owner to ask and she said they are pretty much everything friendly. There were dogs in there when I went. Food is great too!

All the pubs in Crich, Derbyshire are dog friendly. The Cliff Inn gives away dog chews too! The Red Lion in the neighbouring village is dog friendly too. Cliff Inn does nice food. It's just south of Matlock.

The Sun Inn in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire is good too. Beer's good there and they have their own brewery, good is average.

There's another in Leicestershire which is worth a mention but I've got to remember the name of the village!

Sharnford Arms in Sharnford, Leicestershire. Lovely warm welcome. You can walk the dogs round Fosse Meadows first which is very dog and child friendly and has different obstacles and a kids play area. It has streams running through that are great for cooling hot dogs down as well as cleaning mucky paws.

Go on a Sunday and you'll likely be treated to a free bowl of chips at the pub. Landlord is a real dog lover and made a huge fuss of our dogs despite them being soggy from the walk.
