Dog not eating

I am looking after my DM collie dog and she has stopped eating, she is 16. Day 3 now. Have tried changing food, but just not interested but she managed a very small bowl of wet food last night. She has also a horrible smell about her that I can not put my finger on. She does not seem to be in any pain. This does not look good. I see an expensive visit to the vet. Anything else I could try, She is not insured

Dogs can get seperation anxiety when not with the person they are closer too. As for the smell if it smells stronger at her backend then it could be that because she is not eating she won't be going to the toilet and her anal glands could be filling up, you could take her to a dog groomer and they will be able to empty her anal glands. Try giving her some chicken or mince either raw or cooked. My three go of their food when I go on holiday because they are with me all the time even though it's my daughter that looks after them and they are still in the same house. Hope this helps.

Aww, poor girlie. Is she drinking OK? They can become dehydrated very quickly if they're not eating. When's DM home? I'd go to the vet rather than the dog groomer (you'd pay the groomer anyway and the vet will see if there's anything more serious). Hope she'll be OK.

I said try the dog groomers because they will be able to tell straight away from the smell without charging if it is her anal glands. Vets don't give out advice for free.

I nearly did not mention she was not mine because I know for a fact that is not the problem. She spends 3 months a year with me for the past few years, Never had a problem with eating she normally loves her food. I gave her some turkey yesterday but she was just not that interested, Normally she would have gulped it down. She is drinking, maybe not as much as normal. She also seems to have developed urine incontinence so having to let her out many times a day. tbh honest I have sneaky feeling it maybe something serious Sad

What kind of dog is it?
Sixteen is a fair old age...

She is a collie. Not sure how long they live for normally. She is overweight and struggles after walk but up until now seemed fairly ok.

Sorry, I see she is a collie.
It isn't a small dog and sixteen is quite old. She could just be coming near to the end of her time. (Sorry, I know it's always hard to hear). Mine stopped eating in his last few days.

Take her to the vets, now you have given more information I would have said that straight away. If you claim any benefits you could take her to your local PDSA vet as she is in your care otherwise you are just going to have to go to the local vets. It could be a water infection or as you think somrthing more serious.

Does she like cheese? Mine will do almost anything for cheese...

OK, will call the vet. I will try cheese but she normally would eat anything she has always loved her food. So for me a sign that something is wrong. My mum will be devasted, I will feel so guitly if she needs to put to sleep and I have to make that decision. She does not seem to be in any pain.

It is good that she is not in pain. Maybe she is fighting something off and just isn't hungry right now. Even my most ardent eater has had days when she didn't eat because she didn't feel well.
Good luck OP!

Will update once back from the vets. She does seem lethargic today, insists on laying next to me. Luckily I work from home. Thanks for the advise.

Any news OP?

Update, sorry did not see your post pass well vet has given your a right mixture, antibiotics and lots of other stuff, hopefully just a case of dog gastoenteritis but considering her age could be something more sinister. Will have to see if drugs work. Getting her to eat plain chicken, and tricking her into swallowing Anti B's with bits of ham

Hopefully that will sort it out. Does she seem a bit better now?

not really still not eating. Made her boiled chicken rice not interested. giving her all the mediction is a nightmare, she probably thinks we hate her now.
