I've had my German Shepherd since he was tiny present, he was a gift for my mum. He's been working by my since I became a dog handler. He is 9 years old next month and his hips are starting to go. They're lower and he sits with his legs slanted to take the pressure off.
We're moving country so I plan on using our move as his retirement and give him the easiest of life to led. I'll still keep up his nose and training but no more duty.
I'm finding it upsetting as I will eventually return to work but without him and it's a horrible feeling. I've never had a day at work without him.
I just needed to write this down as I'm PG and hormonal and just wanted to share my love I have for our family pet and my co-worker. God, I'm such a sap today!
See, I think this is lovely. He's worked by your side for 9 years, been your colleague as well as your pet, and now you're going to give him a hopefully long and happy retirement, with all the people he loves. He's a lucky boy.
He's only worked by my side for 4 years, however he was my dog on paper etc, he was my mama's work dog but she died when I was in my teens so I took over until I qualified. He means a lot to me. I don't think I could ever replace him but it's so hard not to fall in love GSDs!
I do suggest that anyone looking to adopt a dog, think of the old retiring dogs too. My dad's dog is a retired military dog.
