Dog guard or harness recommendation for Big Dog

Golden retriever hates car travel. I have abandoned crate for car as it really distressed him. I'd like him to travel in the back, as he is hairy and smelly and, if he is ill, I'd rather it was contained! I will consider a harness seatbelt thing, too, if anyone thinks that's a good idea. On his last trip, he sat on the back seat with dd, but I don't think it's wise for him to be unrestrained.

I have a Golf. I want a sturdy guard, but not one of those extremely expensive bespoke ones, and one that is reasonably easy to fit.

Help please!

I use a Bergen car harness for my goldie. It is apparently ok for use on the back seat but as I have a tether post in the boot of my car, she goes in there.
She loves it! Boot kitted out with some vet bed to make it cosy and she just curls up and dozes until we get where we are going, even on longer journeys of about an hour and a half

Thanks for replying. I'll check out the Bergen one. My dog is not a fan of the car - at best yawning and getting agitated, at worst splodges of poo.
