House training

Thought we'd cracked this...but it seems not! We adopted our dog when he was five months old, and it seemed that his previous owner had made no attempt to house train him whatsoever. Through sheer persistence, putting him outside when he had an accident, showing him where to go, taking him outside regularly, rewards for going in the right place etc etc, we seemed to have got there, and had a couple of weeks accident free. But the last three days he's been dreadful - going inside even when the back door is wide open, and not using the mat we leave down for him overnight. Have no idea what else to do! Anyone got any tips? I'll be eternally grateful, as it's driving me mad! Thank you.

Firstly close the door so he can't run back inside.

He will be confused because you let him go inside at night.

Get up with him during the night for a week or so about 2am. Don't talk or engage with him, take him straight outside for the toilet then back to bed.
Get up early to take him again.

He has to realise that the only place he can toilet is outside.
