An elderly couple with health problems have a young border collie dog who is extremely active. In my opinion they can't look after it due to their age and health.

They leave it in their bedroom for most of the day where you can heat it whining and scratching at the door, because if they let it out it jumps up and runs around constantly.

They don't walk it. Instead they let it on to the grass verg outside of their house a few times a day. To be fair, someone used to walk it once a day for them but this has stopped. So the dog is getting zero exercise. This is probably why it hardly eats anything.

I have also seen her throw her shoe at the dog before. And they often smack it for growling or accidents.

I've asked them why they don't rehome it but they say they don't want to get rid of it. I know there are many worse things that could be happening to this dog but I think someone else could look after it better.

I've emailed the RSPCA. But do you think I'm over reacting? I had to leave my phone number and address. Will they contact me does anyone know?

I don't think the RSPCA would be your best bet. You may be able to get in touch with your closest collie rescue to see if they could help. Perhaps if they visited them and explained what they do. If they are older people they will probably be worried it would just be too much trouble and be put down.

It certainly sounds like someone needs to look out for the dog.

Is there any local dog owner who may be receptive to offering to walk it in the meantime, so at least it is getting some exercise until someone can see them?

It sounds like regular exercise would solve a lot of problems; they wouldn't need to keep it locked in the bedroom as some of its energy would have been burned off, and it may have less accidents if it's being taken out for long walks, and the wining would be cut down too. Could you find out why the dog walker stopped walking it? Maybe give them a number of someone who could walk it for them if they're unwilling to rehome and RSPCA don't do anything.

Contact the Cinnamon Trust - they match dog walkers to people with dogs who can't walk them. Oh and the rspca are beyond crap. I doubt they will even respond to your mail.

Ugh stupid phone! You took the words out of my mouth, cinnamon trust would definitely help them find a dog walker in their area, they're a brilliant charity and I'd definitely recommend you put them in touch
