The doghouse

Can any vets/vet nurses/anyone reassure me?

Devil Dog has an ear infection. He has a dark discharge, similar to dried blood, coming from one ear. He's been to the vets who had a good look at him and was sure it is a simple infection. No swimming or baths for two weeks and a two week course of drops.

But he is acting very odd tonight. He is very quiet. Someone knocked at the door earlier and he did not react at all. He simply opened his eyes and then slept again. Normal behaviour is to either run to his bed and await his treat or if I am alone in the house and it's night time, he runs to the door and does his best impression of the worlds most savage dog.

He's also laying on my lap, this is a relatively new thing in itself, he only started laying on me around 18 months ago (we've had him almost 4 years now) but tonight is different, not only is he laying on me but he is pushing his head into my arms and nuzzling and demanding hugs and attention.

He is very quiet.

He is eating and drinking normally.

He is allowing his ear drops to be administered without so much as a grumble, which again is unusual, he normally reacts to pain by causing the pain inflictor great pain.

Do I start the biggest argument of all time and insist he goes to the OOH vets or is just feeling sorry for himself?

It sounds like he just feels bad and wants a snuggle. My big dog was that way, he hated anything preventative administered, but when he felt poorly, he'd just take it, and tried to cuddle (he was very big and not very limber, so it was hard for him to curl up on me).

If he's eating and drinking, and doesn't feel hot, he might jsut be feeling sorry for himself.

I hope he recovers quickly!

Also, ears are nasty and ookie even when they are healthy!

He's been for a walk earlier today and either feigned deafness or was actually struggling to hear and refused to recall away from the youth group that suddenly popped up in the usually deserted woods Blush

They had tennis balls Blush

I had to call him back twice before he came.

It's only tonight he's gone quiet.

I don't have dogs, but cats but I remember one of my old cats, a unaffectionate, seriously aloof big black Tom, never came near us unless for food, suddenly turned into the sloppiest thing ever when he was ill with cat flu, he wouldn't leave my side & insisted on sitting on my lap & demanding cuddles, he was very ill, but he pulled though find & by that stage it wasn't serious, just not nice for him.

I now have another similar natured cat, she fawns over DH, but treats DD & I with disdain, grumbles & moves away if we dare stroke her - she is epileptic & gets very frightened when she has had a fit - for several days after a fit, she is a different cat - she doesn't want DH, but won't leave my side - she had a fit this week, first time images & is sat on my lap trying to head but my iPad out of my hands for attention - she's been sitting with DD this week too.

I think animals aren't daft, they know who to turn to when they are ill & scared, but it doesn't necessarily mean its more serious than you've been told, as said above, they are just feeling low, sorry for themselves & want cuddles :)

It could be the infection has grunged up his ears so sounds are muted, but youngsters with tennis balls....that almost sounds like a serious case of selective deafness!

I think, much like a child, Devil Dog is feeling very poorly and wants reassurance and cuddles, bless him. If he's eating and drinking and exhibiting normal behaviour when you take him for a walk (sniffing, pooping, urinating without issues) I'd give it a few days. Hopefully the drops will have begun to do their work by then. If not, I'd just give the vet a call and check in with them to make sure you shouldn't be concerned. If he vomits I would call the vet immediately just to be on the safe side. Hope the poor guy feels better soon!!

Dooin, how is he? It sounds like a worrying night. I hope he's on the mend now.

He still seems very quiet, but has eaten, was fine on his walk and did not attend any youth groups this time Grin.

He slept in my room last night.

It's just in the house he is very quiet and unusually affectionate.
