With so many posters recently having to say a final goodbye to their pets, just a quick link to the Blue Cross with info about their free phone pet bereavement service.

Thank you so much for posting that link.

We lost our beloved chocolate lab on Saturday so this will be very helpful.

What a great service, I had no idea that existed.

It occurred to me when we came home without OldDog, how lucky I am to have DH and our other dog, I can't imagine how it must be for people who live alone and have to come home to an empty silent house when their only companion goes :(

(it does seem like there's a lot losses mentioned on here recently :()

It is a shame that bereavement "services" are available. Everyone surrounding the actual event doesn't seem to care. For example, our insurance company (Direct Line) wrote to us days after to say

"sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. we have adjusted your insurance policy. for this there has been a £83.16 admin charge."

Seriously? "sorry" and "£83.16" admin charge do not go in the same sentence. I, naturally, burst in to tears. Just horrible, horrible people that would send out such a letter days after you've lost a pet.

We would have cancelled the policy and switched but our other dog is 12. No-one else would insure her now.

Very sorry for all the losses, I've lost them young and old, still feels awful. I once got a sympathy card from a friend which pictured an empty dog bed. I actually wrote to the card company to say what an awful card it was ... they wrote back agreeing ... hope they did actually take it off sale. I also had a letter from my insurance company which referred to my first dog's cremation ... but then going on to say that she would only be covered for xxx condition for another year! Needless to say I wrote a strong letter of complaint there too ...

Thank you for bumping this, I didn't know this existed.

I am so sorry that some people have had such awful experiences. Whilst mine have naturally been terrible, I have thankfully always felt supported by those involved. When I had to have my cat pts I received a lovely card from my vets. Don't think this will happen now as have had to change from a 1 vet & 1 nurse set up, to a large set up with 4 consulting rooms and an army of vets and nurses. Whilst the service is still excellent I miss knowing the staff well.

Bump as I found this whilst searching for some support, having found our lovely little cat 'asleep' on our bed this morning. He had eaten this morning, been out in the garden and just like that, laid down and never woke up.

So sudden and our entire family are in bits. I'm really quite worried how we're going to cope with the gaping hole left in our household.

Thank you for posting OP x
