Best diet dog food

My dog got the snip about a year ago and has piled on the weight.
I know I'm guilty, I gave him too many snacks and leftovers, and though I've cut this down I still give him pedigree chum and a bit of dried too.
He's a beagle/collie cross and I luckily live in a place where I can take him out and let him run, but it's not making any difference.
I looked up on the internet and there's so many choices, can anyone advise me what worked for their dogs?

The most important thing in all pets losing weight is no treats and measuring the food every meal. Weight loss in pets fails when owners don't measure out what is given.
So actually just cutting back the food you are currently giving will be successful. Most vets surgeries run free weight clinics this might be a good idea, the nurse who runs my practices clinic only recommends special diet food if owners have been unsuccessful at cutting back regular food ( currently she has 20 dieting pets and only one on special food).

I agree you need to weigh/measure the food for every meal. If you use treats e.g. for training, subtract the amount from his meals.

I wouldn't bother with diet food personally, a good quality normal food with strict portion-control should be fine.

My dog eats something called Fat Dog Slim (!). She seems to like it although she would prefer me to mix something nice in with it (it's dry food) but she doesn't often get the pleasure. It's not cheap though.
