Winter and dog coats

We have a large labradoodle who has a lovely long wavy coat, but sadly on return from a week in kennels and a few wet walks his hot matts that I can't remove. They are too close to the skin and have tried those special combs with blades but I'm too worried to get too close and they haven't worked.
I have decided to get him clipped at the groomers, which is today!
Now is he going to be getting too cold with a shorter coat? Am I going to need to buy him a doggy coat (never used or needed one before), or will he be ok while it grows back?

Hiya

Just a bit of a heads up, if you do need a dog coat, don't go to a garden centre or pet place, their coats are often over priced and not very robust!

Look at equestrian websites, they do dog coats, made in the same way as horse rugs, much better quality and much cheaper.

A fleece indoor coat and an outdoor waterproof padded coat was less than £20 for the two, made by Masta and for a large greyhound.

To name a few, good luck!

now very silly question, how do i know it will be warm enough for my dog? HOuse is warm so just for walking.

Feel the inside of his ears, I think that's the best way to check if a dog is cold. If the insides of his ears are cold then the rest of him probably is too!

I can recommend these coats -http://www.muddypaws.co.uk/2-in-1-waterproof-coat-from-danish-design.

They have a waterproof outerlayer and with a detatchable, really cosy fleecy liner. They have a under chest protector to keep him dry underneath too and a reflective strip all round for dark nights and mornings. Might be about £30 for a large labradoodle but really good quality. Look out for coats that have a gap for the lead or harness to come through otherwise it's a real bugger.

Floraldog, who is a patterdale , is clipped regularly but only wears his clothes when it's very cold or wet . This year we bought his new wardrobe from EQuafleece and he looks very smart in his jumper and coats. Not that he is particularly impressed!

The mobile mop gets a haircut every 8 weeks and through the winter he has a little deerstalker to wear after haircuts. He hates it and only wears it if I really insist.
