My dog is missing, and I am sad.

That's it, really. I got home from work today and after a few minutes I noticed my dog hadn't rushed up to greet me. I looked all over the house and then the garden, checked the shedsnothing. Called hubby to make sure he hadn't taken him outhe hadn't. We've asked the neighbors, called the dog warden, called the vets and shelters, searched everywhere and put up posters. Apparently someone saw a lone dog walking down the road near our local shop while we were out searching, but they hadn't seen the posters yet and didn't pick him up. This will be the first night he hasn't been with us since we brought him home as a puppy, and I'm worried sick.

We're not sure how he got out. It's possible that he sneaked out under DH's feet when he left for work this morning. He's quite small, and I often have to return him to the house when he takes it upon himself to come to work with me. I found a tiny gap in the fence where part of a slat has broken off, and I think he might have been able to squeeze through, but he would have had to be very determined. He is chipped and I've posted photos of him everywhere. It's going to be a long night.

Have you posted on dogslost?

I know this is a longshot but I don't suppose you're anywhere in herts/essex.borders. a small.dog has been found on one of my local selling pages.

Oh, just checked your profile, you're probably just a wee bit far away for the dog to be yours but just to.be sure is yours a yorkie?

No news yet today :( It's been a long, sleepless night and now I'm just trying to keep the kids occupied while I hope for the phone to ring. He's a miniature poodle--very cute. I think I've posted everywhere, but I'll check dogslost too.

Hi sorry there's no news Sad how are you holding up? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. For what it's worth my lurcher ran off over fields when she was about 8 months old, jumped the back fence 6 hideous hours later with me frantic and pounding on every local farm/door I could think of and organising search parties she found her own way home.

Would someone take him to a vets to be scanned? Maybe ring round them all. Thinking of you, give us good news asap x

I hope you have him home soon. A notice in your local pet shop might a good idea, sounds as though you have covered everwhere else if you've told the warden, the shelters, and all local vets. It is very good that he is microchipped. Is he neutered? I will post later if I think of anything else that might be helpful.

I'm not doing great. The longer we wait, the more stressed and upset I feel. He's never, ever been a wanderer--he's such a home body. And if he did wander, wouldn't he find his way back or at least be nearby? The kennels have been open for a while now, and they would have rung if someone had brought him in.

He is neutered. Unfortunately the local school isn't open until tomorrow, so there won't be the usual foot traffic of all the families on the school run who might well have spotted him yesterday. And although I won't vocalize it near the kids, I'm worried that someone may have stolen him. It just seems so strange for him to suddenly wander.

Would he try and follow your route to work or your DH's? We lost our dog on Hampstead Heath once, and he went to the pub where we'd met friends, and then to the bus stop where we got off, then back to the pub again where luckily someone got hold of him. Could you walk any likely or familar routes, calling for him? Poor you, you must be frantic with worry. Really hope he is found asap. Does he have a disc on his collar? Older people don't tend to think a dog might be chipped, so it might take longer for them to make contact if they've found him and taken him in. I've found a lot of lost dogs, and they can be hard to catch as they get into a panic, but someone is bound to see him soon even if he doesn't get picked up.

I cross posted with you, I hadn't thought of stolen Sad. But I would imagine then that the motivation is money, and if you can put up a decent reward, then they will return him to get the cash. What did the police think?

Report
fuzzypicklehead · 28/06/2012 11:37

If he wandered of his own accord, we think he may have tried to follow the route to school, so we've looked and postered along there. He has a collar but no disc.

hellymelly · 28/06/2012 11:43

The lack of disc might be a reason for you not to have heard anything yet. It just wouldn't occur to a lot of people to take a healthy dog into the vets, even though in a smallish area the vet is the most likely to identify a dog. How about facebook and twitter, asking anyone in the area to look out for him?

Report
PandaWatch · 28/06/2012 11:46

I would notify all vets and shelters in a wide radius, just in case someone picked him up in a car.

Are you on facebook or twitter? If so put something on there and ask everyone to re-post.

Really hope you find him soon. I can't imagine how worried you must be :(

Have you done a thorough search of local places, sheds etc? He may have crawled in somewhere and got stuck? Clutching a bit at straws.....I'm so sorry Sad I do agree that the lack of disc maybe the reason you haven't heard anything a lot of older people or people who dont own pets wouldn't think immediately to go to the vet with a 'stray.' have u checked the local shelters? If you can link to your fb page I'd be happy to share.
