here

i noticed the other thread had gone.

lennox family are waiting on the 2nd day of court on the 23rd to hear lennox' fate.

lennox is a American Bull dog Labrador cross. he was seized by the dog warden and sentenced to be destroyed by the way he looks. 'type'. he was deemed a pit bull type dog.

his brother, from the same litter, was classed as a labrador cross.

his fate lies with teh court, but there is a petition with over 86 000 signatures trying to save a dog from death based on how he looks.

One poster who lives Belfast questioned why the dog warden was visiting if Lennox was not a danger. I have might found the answer by reading a few articles. One of which is here, but there are more articles all stating the same thing. The dog warden had a warrent for a different dog at a different address.

Lennox's owner was a ex vetinary nurse, so unlikely to be an irresponsible owner, who wanted a savage dog.

Regardless of his "type" who can believe that legislation exists that potentially means you can be found "guilty" imprisoned and sentenced to death purely on your genes, and not on whether you have committed any offence. Anyone who thinks this is just a dog only has to look at the last frame of the video with the plea for the return of the "bestest friend" sad

I dont understand who made the distinction between him and his litter mates? People dont all look the same surely the same rationale should be applied to this case? I will be emailing the links to register my disgust at this.

if someone decided that added to the banned dog list was poodle x's, and ralph had to be destroyed based on his looks (he is a poodle/lab x) i would be distraught and i know my 9yr old dd would be wanting her best friend back. he spent this week curled up with her jumper a few times, because she was back at school.

DooinMeCleanin Sat 17-Sep-11 20:25:12

It's the law thewizenedone. If a dogs measurements match certain criteria, the are 'type' regardless of whether there is any Pit Bull in them. This means a fair few pedigree Labradors could, potentially, be classed as type, under this law.

thwizenedone, the same dog warden apparently. but was armed with a dressmakers tape measure when she visited lennox and seized him.

my dsis, good friend and me all have pups from the same litter. they dont look anything like each other. different builds, coats and colours.

''Relevant legislation and regulations

Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 prohibits four types of dog:
•the Pit Bull Terrier
•the Japanese tosa
•the Dogo Argentino
•the Fila Brasileiro

It is important to note that, in the UK, dangerous dogs are classified by “type”, not by breed label. This means that whether a dog is considered dangerous, and therefore prohibited, will depend on a judgment about its physical characteristics, and whether they match the description of a prohibited ‘type’. This assessment of the physical characteristics is made by a court''

Lennox may have less than a week, so sign and share, people, even if only because a dog that has done nothing wrong whatsoever doesn't deserve to die. sad

Pups from the same litter can look so different to each other. Just like misdee's experience, I have a white long haired dog, most of her litter mates are brown and and short haired. But they still have the same parentage and they are still the same breed mix. There has to be a better way of deciding the law than this and we at least need to get it debated.

thewizenedone Sat 17-Sep-11 20:37:37

Well it sucks! my brother had an American pit bull kept legally, tattooed, neutered insured the lot, not taken out without a muzzle, had him and his kennel mate, a staffie freaking one night couldnt get in the door quick enough because a toad had hopped into their bowl!

I just dont understand how anyone could think he looks the pit bull type, if his litter mates are not classed the same how could he possibly in any reality be different? it is just senseless.

DooinMeCleanin Sat 17-Sep-11 20:40:39

The law needs to be changed so that the breed or 'type' of a dog is irrelevent. The problem with the Pit Bull was never the dog. It was at the other end of the lead. That problem has been and is still being ignored.

misdee Sat 17-Sep-11 20:41:06

it doesnt make any sense, and is so so wrong.

this poor dog has been kept without much human interaction for over 480days now. yet the mirror pictures show him being very loving and caring towards the dog warden. the same dog warden who claiims that lennox is aggressive and she is scared of him hmm

his only crime is the way he looks.

CoffeeIsMyFriend Sat 17-Sep-11 20:46:40

I thought the other thread would be pulled, so maybe we can do some good with this one and get more people to sign the petition and lets hope that this dog is returned to its owner.

I own GSDs and have done for what feels like a million years and I get 'looks' often when we are out and about. My family would be devastated if anyone took away my dogs just on looks alone.

It is not fair, it isnt right and we all need to be aware that it MAY happen to any one of our dogs just because of looks alone.

misdee Sat 17-Sep-11 20:58:44

someone asked last week if ralph had a bit of staffie in him, no, but he is looking a bit chunky atm(he took full advantage of the kids being off school). if staffys were abnned then i could've had him seized based on that comment.

CoffeeIsMyFriend Sat 17-Sep-11 21:54:15

Interesting that this thread has had nowhere near the amount of traffic that the other had. sad

misdee Sat 17-Sep-11 21:56:44

Not contravisitional enough

CoffeeIsMyFriend Sat 17-Sep-11 22:23:26

It seems that way misdee - how sad.

thisisyesterday Sat 17-Sep-11 22:51:50

so, if a dog is found to be "pit bull type" they can be PTS just because of that?

it's illegal for anyone anywhere to have a pit bull? and a dog can be killed simply because it is a pit bull?

is that right? or does it have to be aggressive too?

DooinMeCleanin Sat 17-Sep-11 23:06:15

Yes thisisyesterday, that is right. The dog could the most soppy dog you've ever laid eyes on, but if he measures up wrong, he's doomed sad angry

You can, in England I believe, apply for exemption, but you are not always guarenteed to win it and your dog could still be pts, regardless of temprement. If you are lucky enough to get exemption the dog and owner ust abide bya strict set of rules. There is no exemption in NI, so this wouldn't help Lennox.

The possibe repercussions i.e the chance to over haul BSL is excatly why Lennox's case has drawn so much attention. The law needs to be changed so that the breed of the dog is not taken into account and the sole focus is on the behaviour of the dog and the owners capability to correctly train and control the dog.
